Tigers open Spring Break with Doubleheader Sweep

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Sewanee's men's tennis team opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep against Occidental College and UC Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Against No. 40-ranked Occidental, the Tigers picked up a 4-0 win, with the match stopped after Sewanee clinched the deciding point. Ben Lammert and Drew Rukavina got the Tigers started at No. 2 doubles, dropping just one game in a 6-1 win, while Lucas Wrigley and Max Verellen secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3.

In singles, Henry Hyden cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 before Lammert put the Tigers within one point of the match with a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 4. Verellen clinched the match for Sewanee with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Mason Hart at No. 6.

The Tigers then traveled to UC Santa Cruz, where they again secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Hyden and Aidan McVeigh collected a 6-4 win at No. 3, and Verellen and Rukavina followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 2.

In singles, Sam Schroerlucke defeated Rocco Melendez at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, and Verellen added another point for the Tigers at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 result. At No. 6, Rukavina clinched the match for Sewanee in one hour and 11 minutes, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win. Hyden added another point for Sewanee at No. 2 with a 6-3 victory.

Andre-Remi Jakobi fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8). At No. 4, Caden Wong collected the point for the Banana Slugs as Lucas Wrigley retired after the two split sets. Wrigley won the opening set 6-1 before falling 6-3 in the second.

Sewanee will head to Pasadena, California, for a 4 p.m. PT match against California Institute of Technology on Monday, March 9.
