Hyden clinches 4-3 win for No.21 Sewanee over No.31 Caltech

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Henry Hyden clinched the match for Sewanee's men's tennis team as the No. 21-ranked Tigers defeated No. 31-ranked Caltech, 4-3, on Monday night.

Andre-Remi Jakobi and Samuel Schroerlucke collected a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but Caltech claimed the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 and a 7-5 victory at No. 3.

The Beavers pushed their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 1 singles, but Schroerlucke brought Sewanee back within a point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Lucas Wrigley then tied the match at 2-2 for the Tigers with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.

Max Verellen gave Sewanee its first lead of the match after battling back from a first-set loss, 6-4, to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5.

Caltech evened the match at 3-3 when Ben Lammert dropped a hard-fought three-set match at No. 4, falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 after two and a half hours of play.

The match ultimately came down to Hyden at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Hyden forced a third set by winning the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). In the deciding set, Hyden battled to a 7-5 victory, clinching the match for Sewanee on his third match point, in just over three hours and 15 minutes. 

No. 21 Sewanee will face No. 25 Haverford tomorrow, March 10, before closing out its spring break trip at Chapman on Wednesday afternoon.
