SEWANEE, Tenn. – Marlin Price scored a career-high eight goals and Emma Steffensen collected a career-high 15 saves in goal as Sewanee used a 9-1 run spanning the second and third quarters to defeat John Carroll, 20-11, on Friday afternoon in Memphis.

Price added four ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers to her afternoon. She took 11 shots, all on goal, finishing 8-of-11 with one free-position goal. Elizabeth Muller added four points with two goals and two assists, while Ellen Lewis tallied three goals and an assist with two ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover. Alex Kelly posted three goals on three shots, and Erika Bolcar added a goal and two assists.

Defensively, Steffensen recorded a career-high 15 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal. Sally Whitehead, Ella Townsend, and Helen Newcomb each collected three caused turnovers, while Whitehead and Newcomb added three ground balls apiece. Sofia Bean secured four draw controls for the Tigers to go along with an assist.

John Carroll struck first with two goals in the opening four minutes, including one man-up, before Sewanee responded with three unanswered goals to take a brief lead. Price found the back of the net after the Tigers gained possession thanks to a caused turnover by Izzo Palmer, and Lewis followed with a man-up goal. Bolcar then connected with Kennedy Harcourt to give Sewanee a 3-2 lead with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Streaks answered with a free-position goal to send the game tied into the second quarter.

John Carroll continued its run to open the second, scoring two more goals in the first three minutes, including another free-position score.

The Tigers responded with a 7-1 run to close the half and take a four-goal lead. A caused turnover and ground ball from Whitehead gave Sewanee possession before Price scored her second goal. Lewis added another, and Whitehead won the ensuing draw control to give the Tigers possession again. Harcourt then found Price for a goal just a minute later. With 6:52 left in the half, Kelly scored before Bean assisted Lewis for another Sewanee goal. John Carroll answered on its next possession, but Townsend fed Bolcar to push the lead back to three. Bolcar then connected with Muller with just under two minutes remaining in the half, giving Sewanee a 10-6 advantage.

Sewanee continued its run in the third quarter as Katherine Clark and Price each scored. John Carroll ended nearly a 13-minute scoring drought with a goal at the 6:58 mark, but Price responded after drawing a foul, converting a free-position attempt for her fifth goal of the game. The Blue Streaks quickly answered after winning the draw, but Lewis controlled the next draw for Sewanee, and Muller added another goal.

John Carroll scored three times in the final quarter, but Sewanee added six more goals to push its lead to nine and secure the 20-11 win.

Both teams finished with 24 shots on goal, but Steffensen's 15 saves proved to be a key difference for the Tigers.

Sewanee returns home to host Lake Forest and Wittenberg on Tuesday and Wednesday with noon and 11 a.m. starts, respectively, to wrap up spring break.
