Barker Sets Career Hits Record; Sewanee Drops SAA Twinbill to Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maggie Barker recorded four hits on the day and set Sewanee's career hits record, Abby Winkler drove in five runs including her first career home run and Sydney Tackett added multiple hits, but big innings and costly errors sent Rhodes past Sewanee in a Southern Athletic Association opening doubleheader, 9-4 and 15-8, on Saturday afternoon.

Barker finished with three hits and two RBIs in the opener and added a hit, an RBI and a run scored in the second game.

In the first game, Barker went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and set the program's career hits record, but a four-run fourth inning from Rhodes proved to be the difference in a 9-4 Sewanee loss.

Rhodes started quickly with an RBI double to left center and a single to right center to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Sewanee answered in the bottom half as Sydney Tackett reached and came around to score when Barker hit a line drive off the third baseman's glove, cutting the deficit to one.

Reagan Huskey settled in after that, inducing two groundouts and a lineout in the second for a three-up, three-down inning.

However, in the fourth inning, Rhodes broke the game open with four runs. The first came as Katie Bejian stole second and a run scored on the throw, before Emma Whittington added an RBI single. The Lynx capped the inning with a two-run double to right field to extend the lead to 6-1.

In the fifth, Sewanee mounted a response after Rhodes issued two walks to open the inning. Abbie Buckner lined a single just inside the right field line to score Huskey, and Barker followed with an RBI single to bring KK Wadkins home and cut the lead to 6-3.

Rhodes added three more runs in the seventh after loading the bases, using a sacrifice fly and a two-run double to push the advantage back to six.

Sewanee plated one final run in the bottom of the seventh as Ansley Giffin reached and Buckner scored, but a groundout ended the game.

The Tigers stranded eight runners in the contest.

In game two, Abby Winkler drove in five runs, including a three-run home run, and Sewanee collected eight hits, but a six-run fourth inning fueled Rhodes to a 15-8 win in game two.

Sewanee opened the scoring in the first as Tackett doubled to left field, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Grace Black.

Rhodes answered with three runs in the third, capitalizing on a Sewanee error and adding a two-RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers responded with four runs—all with two outs—in the bottom of the third. Tackett walked and moved into scoring position before Barker delivered an RBI single to right center. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Winkler drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give Sewanee a 4-3 lead. The Tigers added another run as Winkler swiped second and Madilyn Parker scored.

Rhodes took control in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on three hits while taking advantage of three Sewanee errors to build a 9-5 lead.

Sewanee battled back in the fifth as Winkler launched a three-run home run to left center, her first career homer, with two outs to bring the Tigers within one at 9-8.

Rhodes added a run in the sixth on an RBI double before pulling away with five runs in the seventh, including a two-run home run, to secure the win.

Sewanee stranded four runners in the second game.

The Tigers will face Rhodes in the final game of the series on Sunday at Noon.
