Sewanee falls to Bethany Lutheran in series finale

SEWANEE, Tenn. – John Bagwell recorded an RBI single for Sewanee, but the Tigers left eight runners on base and surrendered four home runs in the final game of the four-game series against Bethany Lutheran on Sunday afternoon, falling 15-1.

In the top of the third, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Vikings. Joshua Miller then delivered a no-outs grand slam on the first pitch he saw, registering Bethany Lutheran's first hit of the day and giving the visitors a 4-0 lead early. After another walk, Gary Swann followed with a two-run home run to left field to extend the advantage to 6-0.

Graber allowed just two hits in his outing, both home runs, while surrendering six runs with four walks and a hit by pitch.
Ben Weiser came in to pitch for the Tigers in the third and worked out of further trouble, recording key outs to halt the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ethan Williams got things started for Sewanee with a two-out single to right center after Bill Gantt was hit by a pitch. John Bagwell then recorded a two-out RBI single to left field, sending Gantt home for Sewanee's lone run. Tre Wilson followed with a walk to load the bases, but Bethany Lutheran starter Nate Hoffman struck out his seventh batter of the afternoon to strand three Tigers.

Bethany Lutheran added to its lead in the fifth inning as Vincent Curzie launched a solo home run to left field, making it 7-1.

The Vikings broke the game open in the top of the sixth after Ryan Zaparaniuk entered in relief. Jared Harry opened the inning with a solo home run before Bethany Lutheran capitalized on a Sewanee error, a run-scoring single to right field, and a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 10-1.

Wood Parker came in for the Tigers in his first collegiate appearance and collected his first career strikeout, but the Vikings added five more runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Miller.

Childers Winn closed the game on the mound for Sewanee, striking out three batters in a scoreless seventh inning. Will Moore opened the bottom half with a single and advanced to second during Zach Fortman's at bat, but Jaden Case entered to record back-to-back strikeouts and end the game in seven innings.

Sewanee starter Ethan Graber (0-1) allowed six runs on two hits across 2.0 innings while recording one strikeout in the loss. Hoffman (1-0) earned the win for Bethany Lutheran, working five innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven.

The Tigers will continue their homestand as they host Covenant College for a midweek single game on Tuesday at noon before welcoming Asbury for a three-game series, featuring a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday, prior to traveling to Pensacola for two contests.
