Men's hoops starts fast, never looks back in 95-68 victory

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee started on fire, jumping out to a 35-12 lead, and Aidan Treacy led four players in double figures with 17 points while Jack Bakken and Fletcher Bigham each posted double-doubles in a 95-68 victory over Oglethorpe University in men's basketball action here Friday night at Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers (9-12, 5-5 SAA) ended a four-game losing streak and did it in style, racing out to the early lead and never looking back. Sewanee started the game 12-for-18 from the field and shot 58 percent in the first half compared to 30 percent for the Stormy Petrels (6-14, 3-6).

The Tigers scored the first 12 points of the game in two-and-a-half minutes and then posted 8-0 and 13-0 runs that led to the 35-12 advantage just over 11 minutes into the contest. Treacy collected nine points and eight different players scored for Sewanee.

Treacy's second 3-pointer of the half extended the lead to 47-19 with three minutes to play and Bakken's old-fashioned 3-point play in the final 30 seconds gave Sewanee a 52-26 advantage at the break.

The Tigers scored the first 12 points of the game in two-and-a-half minutes, with Nikolas Avaliani and Treacy each making 3-pointers along with field goals from Bakken, Treacy and Bigham. Jackson Kemp got the Stormy Petrels on the board and Carter Watkins made a triple, but Sewanee answered with eight consecutive points.

Reid Carrier made two foul shots before a basket by JD Gardner and two from Philip Ryan. The Tigers continued to scorch the nets in the middle of the half, running off 13 consecutive points, with Bakken, Bigham and Gardner each scoring field goals before buckets from Avaliani and Treacy and a 3-pointer by Kaden Ferguson, putting the Tigers in front, 35-12.

Oglethorpe never got closer than 23 points in the second half and Sewanee pushed the lead to 32 with a 9-0 run. Bigham netted one free throw, Treacy completed an old-fashioned 3-point play before a 3-pointer and a layup by Carrier.

Bigham finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists while Bakken collected 11 points and 14 boards. Carrier netted three 3-pointers and posted 13 points and Ryan recorded 10 points.
