Will Jennewein posted three hits and three RBIs,
Eli Potter tossed three-plus innings of relief for the win and
Childers Winn got the final two outs for the save in Sewanee's come-from-behind 7-6 victory in the first of a four-game series over Bethany Lutheran in baseball action Friday at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers trailed, 5-0, after two-and-a-half innings before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the third to tie the contest.
Zach Fortman and Jennewein each drove in two runs in the inning for the home team.
Jennewein doubled home a run in the sixth inning and scored the eventual game-winning run on an RBI single by
John Bagwell. Fortman singled, was hit twice, drove in two runs and scored twice while Jennewein collected three of the team's six hits in the contest.
Sewanee starter
Taj Donald worked five innings, allowing five runs, four earned on nine hits with three strikeouts. The Vikings took advantage of two failed pickoff attempts by Donald to plate a run in the second inning and Xander Meissner and Seth Jones both hit two-run homers in the third to take the early 5-0 advantage.
Gary Swann belted a one-out solo homer in the ninth for Bethany Lutheran and after a walk to Meissner, Winn induced a groundout and a flyout to end the contest for the save.
Potter (1-0) gave up one run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings for the victory.
Vikings starter Adryen Tietz lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on three hits. Reliever Tyson Reger suffered the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in five innings.
Bethany Lutheran plated the first run of the game in the second inning after a leadoff walk by Jones, who moved to second and third on failed pickoff throws from Donald. Anthony Kuznia's sacrifice fly put the visitors in front, 1-0.
In the third Jayden Knutson led off with a single and came across on Meissner's two-run homer. Yunior Pena Torres then singled and two batters later, Jones also homered for a 5-0 Vikings advantage.
The Tigers tied the game with five runs on just three hits in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a leadoff walk to Bagwell.
Aidan Petrocco was hit with
Spencer Yu singled to right, loading the bases.
Charlie Teel drove in a run with a sac fly and
Tyler Pinson was also hit, loading the bases again.
Fortman singled down the leftfield line, plating two runs, and Jennewein followed with a two-run single to right, knotting the contest at five.
Donald stranded a pair of runners in the fourth and induced a doubleplay after two runners reached in the fifth. Potter retired the side in order in the sixth, walked a batter in the seventh and allowed a bunt single in the eighth before the one-out homer and walk in the ninth.
Sewanee took the lead for good in the sixth when Fortman was hit to leadoff and scored on a double to left by Jennewein, who went to third on an errant throw to the plate. Bagwell's one-out single to right plated Jennewein with the eventual game-winning run.
The two teams play two seven-inning games Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
