SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Taj Donald tossed five innings for the win,
Aidan Petrocco posted two hits and three runs scored and
Will Jennewein collected two hits and three RBIs in his season debut in Sewanee's 13-3 victory in eight innings here Friday against Oberlin College at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers (3-1) scored two runs in each of the first, second, third and fourth innings, more than enough for Donald (1-0), who gave up three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. He struck out six consecutive batters over the first three frames and just one run before the Yeomen plated two runs in his final inning.
Charlie Teel doubled home a run and scored on a throwing error after stealing third for the two runs in the first inning.
Spencer Yu's two-run double plated runs in the second before an RBI single by Jennewein and a sacrifice fly from
Sebastian Leinberger in the third. One run came across on an error and Jennewein's sac fly gave the Tigers an 8-1 lead after four innings.
Sewanee scored four runs in the eighth on one hit thanks to four walks and two hit by pitches to end the game because of the 10-run rule.
Tyler Pinson and
Zach Fortman each recorded two hits and two runs scored and Jennewein scored twice as well.
Will Berry worked two scoreless innings, giving up one hit, in relief of Donald and
George Kell tossed the final inning, allowing no hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Oberlin (0-1) starter Calvin Burkholder (0-1) gave up six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in three innings.
The Tigers struck twice in the first inning after a leadoff single from Petrocco, who moved to second on a chopper by Yu. Teel then sliced a double down the leftfield line, trading places with Petrocco. Teel stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher for an early 2-0 lead for the home team.
Sewanee plated two more runs in the second, with
Owen Andress singling to center to leadoff.
Tre Wilson bunted but the throw from the third baseman was low, putting two runners on base. Petrocco's liner sailed over the rightfielder's head and all the way to the wall, but Andress was thrown out at the plate after trying to tag on the play.
Yu sliced a double just inside the first base bag for the double, plating both runners and extending the lead to 4-0.
The Yeomen got on the board in the third when Patrick Leonard tripled off the wall in rightfield and scored on an infield chopper by Brady Groves.
Pinson singled to start the third for the Tigers and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Jennewein's liner went off the leg of the Oberlin first baseman, allowing a run to score, and after a walk to Andress and Wilson was hit, Leinberger's fly ball to right pushed across a run for a 6-0 edge.
Petrocco was hit and Yu walked to leadoff the fourth and Pinson's grounder up the middle went off the glove of the shortstop into centerfield, scoring a run. Fortman then walked and Jennewein's sac fly to center plated Yu for an 8-1 advantage.
Oberlin got two runs back in the fifth, starting with a leadoff single to left by Anton Shelton. Santiago Serrano sliced a double down the rightfield line, just out of the reach of a diving Leinberger, and with one out, Leonard singled to right, driving in two runs.
In the sixth Fortman singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Jennewein's single to right, stretching the lead to 9-3.
Sewanee and Oberlin play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
