Cold shooting sends Rhodes past Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Nikolas Avaliani and Kaden Ferguson led Sewanee with nine points, as the Tigers' men's basketball team fell on the road Friday night, dropping a 97-49 decision to the Rhodes Lynx inside Mallory Gymnasium.

Reid Carrier added seven points, while Jack Bakken, Jacob Amonett, and JD Gardner each finished with six. Gardner added a team-high seven rebounds, while Amonett grabbed four boards.

The Tigers shot a season-low 30 percent from the field, finishing 17-of-57 overall and 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Sewanee also collected just 25 rebounds in the game, another season low. The Lynx shot 55 percent from the floor and 8-of-23 from three-point range, while adding 50 points off the bench and converting Sewanee's 15 turnovers into 21 points.

Rhodes opened the contest with a quick 11-2 run and continued to build separation through the opening minutes. Philip Ryan put Sewanee on the board at the free-throw line, and a fast-break layup from Ferguson trimmed the deficit to 6-4, but the Lynx responded with a series of transition baskets to push the lead into double figures.

Sewanee found some offense inside midway through the half, as baskets from Avaliani, Aidan Treacy, and Bakken slowed the momentum, but Rhodes answered with a 14-0 run to stretch its advantage. A three from Carrier late in the half snapped the run, but the Lynx maintained control and carried a 55-20 lead into the break.

The Tigers opened the second half with energy, as Carrier converted two free throws and followed with a fast-break layup off a steal. Bakken and Gardner added buckets in the paint, and Amonett knocked down a three-pointer to highlight an early second-half push.

Rhodes, however, continued to find success in transition and from the interior, rebuilding its cushion with a 13-3 run. Sewanee continued to battle, getting a three from Amonett and buckets from Ferguson and Gardner, but was unable to generate a sustained run as the Lynx extended the margin down the stretch.

Sewanee finished with eight fast-break points and eight points off turnovers, while getting 21 points from its bench. The Tigers totaled 26 points in the paint.

Sewanee returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15, at Millsaps before closing the regular season at Centre on Saturday, Feb. 21.
