Hill sends Tigers past Southwestern, 1-0

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Lauren Hill scored in the 49th minute off an assist from Tori Botthof, and Sewanee shut out Southwestern to earn a 1-0 victory in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Puett Field.

The Tigers created several scoring opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Pirates 10-1. Tori Botthof put an early shot on target in the fifth minute, but Southwestern goalkeeper Erin York made the save. Hill followed with multiple attempts, including a shot in the 11th minute that was saved by York. Khiana Roraback had another dangerous look, as her shot right inside the box drifted just high.

Sewanee continued to pressure the Pirates throughout the opening half, earning four corner kicks and putting five shots on target. However, York kept the Tigers off the scoreboard as the teams entered halftime tied 0-0.

The Tigers broke through just three minutes into the second half. Botthof set up Hill for the game-winning goal at the 48:03 mark, slotting the ball past the Southwestern goalkeeper, giving Sewanee a 1-0 lead.

Southwestern looked to respond, but goalkeeper Ashley Vinck made a save on Maddie Holland's attempt in the 52nd minute to preserve the Tigers' advantage. Sewanee continued to create opportunities on the attacking end, with Pope Scurlock forcing another save in the 67th minute.

The Tigers held the Pirates without a shot on goal for the remainder of the contest, securing the shutout and the 1-0 victory.

Sewanee finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers also earned seven corner kicks, while Vinck recorded one save in the shutout. York finished with seven saves for Southwestern.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27, heading to Birmingham on Tuesday afternoon to face Belhaven at 4 p.m.
