SEWANEE, Tenn. – Savannah Gann and Suna Merkler combined for 28 kills, while Sophia Caruso tallied 26 digs, but the Sewanee Tigers fell to the Southwestern Pirates, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Pirates' SAA pod.

Gann paced the tigers 15 kills, while Merkler added 13 kills and a team-high five aces. Estela Gonzales recorded 21 assists, with Jordan Krise tacking on 17. Elena Sipe posted four blocks.

Sewanee came back from an early 13-7 deficit in the first set. Merkler had four aces and a kill, while Gann posted three kills, during a 14-1 run for the Tigers. The Pirates came roaring back, in part due to a 6-0 run, and eventually forced a 25-25 tie. But a kill from Merkler and a Southwestern attacking error gave the Tigers a 27-25 win.

Southwestern held the Tigers to under .100 hitting in the second to win 25-20, ending the frame on a 3-0 run. The match was tied 1-1.

In the third set, the Tigers held a 22-16 advantage, but Southwestern rattled off five in a row to make it a one-point game. A later kill from Mollie White would give Sewanee set point, 24-22, before the Pirates scored four unanswered to win 26-24.

Sewanee hit .400 in the fourth set, taking a 10-2 lead early. The Pirates then tallied a run of 11-1 to go up by two. The set stayed close before Sewanee utilized a 5-1 run to end the frame, 25-20, tying the match 2-2.

In the fifth, Sewanee faced a 9-6 deficit before the Pirates took all but one of the final seven points of the match to win 15-7.
