SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey collected 23 points and
Janie Boyd posted 21 points and nine rebounds, but Trinity University jumped out to an early lead and held off Sewanee in the second half, 80-64, in women's basketball action Friday night here at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (8-11, 1-7 SAA) trailed 26-6 late in the first quarter after failing to score for more than six minutes in the opening period. Sewanee scored the final six points in the first quarter and trailed, 43-28, at the half.
The Tigers pulled within 11 midway through the third period thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Boyd and one by Falvey.
Hannah Cleveland's layup and two foul shots by Falvey at the 2:47 mark cut the deficit to nine, 54-45, and the home team trailed by 10 headed to the final period.
Brianna Keating-Rendon hit a triple with 6:46 remaining in the contest, pulling the Tigers within, 63-52, but that was as close as Sewanee would get. Trinity netted nine of the next 12 points, including four points apiece for Kylie Minter and Ivory Scott.
Falvey answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play, but Livy Sauvageau, who led Trinity with 22 points, drilled a three at the end of the shot clock with 2:16 to play. Minter collected 14 points and Skye O'Rourke registered 13 while Scott finished with 11 points, 11 boards and five assists.
Eliza Everett grabbed 10 rebounds for the Tigers but Boyd and Falvey accounted for 69 percent of the team's points, combining to make 16-of-36 from the field and 5-for-13 from 3-point range. The remainder of the club shot 8-of-29 (.276).
Sewanee scored six points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the first quarter but then did not post another point for six-and-a-half minutes. Trinity netted 20 consecutive points, starting with a jumper and a 3-pointer by Sauvageau. Minter added a pair of field goals before another three by Sauvageau.
Emma Winans scored twice around another basket for Minter and Allison Evan's layup gave Trinity a 26-6 advantage. The Tigers committed seven turnovers and missed five shots during the scoring drought.
Two free throws by Boyd ended the stretch and Falvey connected on two foul shots before a layup just before the quarter buzzer by Boyd made it 26-12 Trinity after 10 minutes.
Boyd and Everett each recorded putbacks for Sewanee to start the second period and Falvey netted seven straight points, including two short jumpers and a 3-pointer. O'Rourke and Dana Gingrey each connected on triples for Trinity, though, keeping the lead at 40-23 for the visitors.
Keating-Rendon connected on a 3-pointer for the Tigers and Boyd scored underneath before Maddie Mueller made a triple from the corner in the final seconds of the half for a 43-28 Trinity advantage.
Sauvageau posted 12 points in the first half to lead all scorers while Falvey collected 11 and Boyd added 10 for the Tigers. Trinity shot 71 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes but cooled off (5-for-17) in the second period. Sewanee recorded 10 turnovers in the first quarter but just three in the second.
The Tigers host Southwestern University at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the second of four straight home games.
