Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Carrier tallies 27 second-half points to send Tigers past Oglethorpe

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Reid Carrier erupted for 29 points, including 27 in the second half, and Fletcher Bigham recorded his ninth double-double of the season as the Sewanee men's basketball team held off Oglethorpe, 93-85, in Southern Athletic Association action Friday night at Dorough Field House.

Carrier was dominant after the break, knocking down six three-pointers in the second half while finishing 6-of-8 from beyond the arc during that stretch. He also went 7-of-8 at the free-throw line and added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Bigham followed with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Nikolas Avaliani contributed 18 points, two assists, and a steal. Jack Bakken posted a double-double of his own with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.

Sewanee jumped out to a strong start, opening the game on a 14-4 run behind eight points from Bigham, four from Bakken, and a bucket from Aidan Treacy. Oglethorpe clawed back to within one, but JD Gardner answered with a layup to spark a 6-0 Tigers run. The Petrels responded with a 12-6 surge over the next four minutes, using two three-pointers to pull back within one once again.

The Tigers countered with a layup from Bigham and a turnaround jumper by Avaliani, but Oglethorpe stayed close. Jackson Kemp drained his second three-pointer in just over a minute to make it a two-point game before a brief scoring drought. Malachi Dooley broke the stalemate, tying the contest at 38-38 with 1:40 remaining in the half. Kam Stone went 3-of-5 from the free-throw line in the final minute, giving Oglethorpe a 41-40 edge at halftime.

The teams traded baskets to open the second half before Carrier caught fire, drilling back-to-back three-pointers to give Sewanee a brief lead. Oglethorpe responded with a three from Carter Watkins and two free throws from Dooley to reclaim the advantage. Avaliani then sparked a decisive 16-6 Tigers run with a jumper, as he and Carrier each scored five points during the stretch, while Bakken, Gardner, and Bigham added two apiece.

Dooley trimmed the lead with an old-fashioned three-point play, but Sewanee answered once more. Avaliani went 2-for-2 from the line, Carrier connected on his fourth three of the half, and Bigham capped another 6-0 run with a layup to push the Tigers ahead 77-67 with six minutes remaining.

Oglethorpe cut into the margin behind a Watkins three-pointer, but Sewanee sealed the win at the free-throw line, converting 5-of-6 attempts down the stretch. The Tigers maintained control in the final minutes to secure the 93-85 conference victory.

Sewanee finished the night shooting 57.6 percent from the floor, 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range, and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line (14-of-18). Oglethorpe was just 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) at the stripe.

The Tigers will continue their road swing Sunday, traveling to Mount Berry, Ga., to face Berry College at 1 p.m. CT.
