Weston’s key win lifts Sewanee past No. 15 Redlands in NCAA Tournament

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee took on No. 15 Redlands in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, coming away with the win in five hours and 15 minutes, with the match coming down to a third set battle at No. 6 singles, as senior Gil Weston came away with the win, 6-4 in the third.

Sewanee took the doubles point as Weston and Talman Ramsey won a decisive 6-1 match at No. 3 doubles. Redlands evened the score with a win at No. 2 doubles, but Quinn Wicklund and Jordan Theron clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with a 6-2 win at No. 1.

Singles proved to be a battle, as the first four matches on court, inside because of weather, were decided in a third set. Theron won at No. 1 for Sewanee, dropping the first set, 5-7, but dropped just three games after the first set, pulling out a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 win. Andre-Remi Jakobi won the first set, 6-3, but Vitomir Petcov won the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, taking the No. 3 singles point. The Bulldogs collected another point at No. 2 singles as Ben Lammert took the opening set, 6-3, but dropped the second in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, and fell in a close third set, 6-4.

Talman Ramsey and Weston were next to go on the courts following the completion of the first two matches. Ramsey got off to a quick start, taking the first set, 6-1. He followed it up with the only single set win of the match, with a 6-4 second set.

The match game down to Weston at six, he dropped the first set, 1-6, but game back to force a third with a 7-5 second set win. Battling to the end, Weston pulled out a 6-4 third set, securing the match for the Tigers and sending them past the Bulldogs, and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face Emory on Sunday at Noon.
