Freeman's five goals lead Sewanee past Hendrix, 13-3, in SAA Quarterfinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Powered by a six-point night from Robert Freeman, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team rolled to a 13-3 victory over Hendrix College in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Harris Stadium.

Freeman led the way with five goals, one assist, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Charles Moran added three goals and an assist, while Griffin Peterson contributed a goal and two assists. Both Moran and Peterson collected two ground balls, and Peterson also forced a turnover.

Flynn Bowman anchored the defense with 15 saves, four ground balls, and a caused turnover. Gus Albright also added four ground balls for the Tigers.

Sewanee wasted no time getting on the board, as Freeman scored off an assist from Moran in the opening minutes. Freeman then fed Will Kennedy for another goal, and Niko Maheras found Devon Root with under a minute to play in the first quarter to give Sewanee a 3-0 lead.

Moran opened the second quarter with a solo effort before a failed Hendrix clear led to Freeman's second goal, assisted by Kennedy. Freeman struck again quickly, tallying two man-up goals within 25 seconds, both assisted by Peterson.

The Tigers opened the second half with another failed clear by Hendrix, leading to Moran's second goal. With 8:55 in the third, Griffin Peterson made his way through a slew of defenders and found his way past the Hendrix goalie for a diving goal. Freeman found his fifth goal with 7:32 on the clock. Henry Westfall then connected on his first goal of the game, pushing through Hendrix's defense for Sewanee's 11th goal. Maheras picked up a ground ball and found the back of the net with 1:06 left in the third quarter.

Freeman's caused turnover set up Sewanee's final goal, with Hank Walsh assisting Moran. Hendrix scored three late goals, but the Tigers' early dominance secured the quarterfinal win.

Sewanee outshot Hendrix 62-33, held a 43-30 advantage in ground balls, and went 25-of-26 on clears.

The Tigers advance to the SAA Semifinals, where they will face Centre College on Friday night in Memphis, Tenn.
