SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Aidan Petrocco posted two hits in the opener and
Zach Fortman belted a two-run homer in the second game, but Centre used big innings in both contests to sweep a doubleheader, 19-4 and 9-2, against Sewanee in baseball action Saturday in Danville, Ky.
The Tigers (18-17, 4-11 SAA) held a 3-0 lead after a half inning and trailed just 6-3 in the fourth in the first game before the Colonels exploded for 13 runs on 10 hits against three Sewanee hurlers.
In the second contest Centre led 4-0 before Fortman's two-run blast in the fourth, but the Colonels answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back, sweeping the Tigers.
Taj Donald (2-3) suffered the loss in the opener, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in three innings.
Jake Walling and
Braeden Mefford gave up 13 runs (11 earned) on 10 hits in two-thirds of an inning in the fourth.
Petrocco singled twice, walked and scored a run and
Alden Wright collected two RBIs in the game.
Isaac Rone (4-1), the second of four Centre pitchers, picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless frames, giving up two hits with three strikeouts.
Sewanee scored three times in the top of the first against Centre (25-7, 10-5) starter Andrew Zimmerman, with Petrocco drawing a walk to leadoff before
Blake Pou was hit with one out. Fortman was also hit, loading the bases, and
Will Jennewein's grounded plated a run.
Sebastian Leinberger was hit with two outs and Wright followed with a two-run single to center.
Centre got a run back in the first and tied the contest at three in the second on a two-run homer from Aaron Lopez. The Colonels added three more runs in the third before the 13-run frame in the fourth.
Centre plated a run in the first and Baylor Woodall and Lopez both hit solo homers in the second inning. Ayden Lohr posted a solo homer in the third, but
Charlie Teel walked and Fortman homered in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
The Colonels recorded three runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth.
Austin Graber (4-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in four innings.
Ben Prather (4-0) tossed six innings for the win, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Sewanee ends the regular season next weekend with a three-game series Saturday beginning at Noon.
