Men's lacrosse picks up Senior Day win against Berry

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Will Kennedy scored five goals and added an assist, while Charles Moran dished out six assists and tallied a goal as Sewanee's men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day, defeating Berry, 19-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Freeman scored four goals and one assist, while Niko Maheras and Devon Root scored twice each. Hank Walsh, Sage Cookerly, Corbet Darden, Henry Westfall, and Griffin Peterson also added a goal apiece.

Kennedy added three ground balls and a caused turnover to his standout performance. Moran also collected three ground balls. Manoli Loupassi turnover in a career-best three caused turnovers, along with three ground balls and an assist. Walsh added two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Sewanee held Berry to just 12-of-20 on clears, and outshot the Vikings 53-to-36.

The Vikings struck first with 11:21 in the opening quarter, but Maheras quickly answered to put Sewanee on the board. Moran connected with Darden to give Tigers the lead, but Berry tied it back up. Root capped the first-quarter scoring following a failed Berry clear, giving Sewanee a 3-2 edge.

The back-and-forth continued early in the second, with Berry tying the game at 3-3. However, Loupassi's caused turnover sparked a goal by Kennedy from Freeman, and although the Vikings responded once more, Sewanee took the lead for good. Root started a 4-1 run, followed by two goals from Kennedy – assisted by Louapssi and then Moran – and a goal from Freeman, giving Sewanee a 8-5 lead heading into halftime.

Sewanee broke the game open in the third quarter with five unanswered goals. Westfall opened the period off another Moran assist before Moran scored himself. Kennedy followed with two straight, assied by Maheras and Gus Albright. Moran picked up the ground ball off of a Sewanee shot, finding Walsh open for a 13-5 game. Berry responded with its only goal of the quarter, but Sewanee closed the frame with two more tallies. Peterson scored off a feed from Walsh following another Loupassi takeaway, and Maheras added a goal with 22 seconds left.

Berry opened the fourth with a man-up goal, but Cookerly answered two minutes later. A ground ball from Mac Elliott set up Freeman's next goal, added by Moran. Freeman scored two more times – once man-up off a Kennedy assist, and once off a Root caused turnover and Moran feed– to complete his fourth quarter hat trick. Berry scored once more in the final minute, but Sewanee had already secured the convincing win.

Sewanee wraps up the regular season at home against Centre on Friday, April 19. Opening faceoff is set for Noon.
