SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Matt Munn tossed a five-hit shutout and
Blake Pou posted three hits and two RBIs while
Sebastian Leinberger,
Charlie Teel and
Alden Wright each drove in two runs in a 10-0 Sewanee victory over Oglethorpe in the opener of Saturday's baseball doubleheader in Atlanta, Ga.
In the second game the Stormy Petrels won a back-and-forth affair, 11-8, with Oglethorpe taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning before the Tigers plated eight consecutive runs over the next three frames. The Stormy Petrels then plated the final seven runs for the win, evening the series at one game apiece.
Will Jennewein collected three hits with three RBIs and Teel and
Owen Andress each registered two RBIs for Sewanee. The Tigers collected 12 hits in the game but stranded nine runners.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at Noon ET.
In the first game Sewanee plated three runs in the top of the first, including a two-run single by Teel, staking Munn to an early lead. Pou's two-run triple in the second make it 5-0 and four more runs in the fifth stretched the lead to 9-0, with Wright plating the final two with a single.
Aidan Petrocco's RBI single in the eighth helped the Tigers end the game early.
Munn did not walk a batter, hit one and struck out six, scattering five hits in the eight innings of work. The righthander induced ground ball doubleplays in the second, fifth and eighth innings and a two-out double in the third by Jonathan Cruz was the only baserunner to reach second in the contest for Oglethorpe.
JB Sain, the Oglethorpe starter, took the loss, allowing nine runs, two earned, on nine hits in 4.1 innings. The home team committed four errors in the game, all in the first five innings.
The Stormy Petrels scored four runs in the first inning of the second contest on two hits and three Sewanee errors, putting Sewanee starter
Taj Donald in an early hole. Andress posted a two-run double in the second inning and Teel's double tied the game in the third before Jennewein followed with a two-run homer.
Zach Fortman's run-scoring triple and an RBI single from Jennewein in the fourth make it 8-4 Tigers. Donald retired the side in order in the second and third innings before running into trouble in the fourth.
Oglethorpe plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to regain the lead.
Henry Collins (1-2) suffered the loss for Sewanee, allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts in two-plus innings of work. Konner Burrell (3-0) got the win with 2.1 scoreless innings and Tate Henderson picked up his second save, getting the final three outs.
The Tigers started quickly in the opener with three runs in the first inning after a leadoff single to right from Leinberger and a one-out single from Pou. Fortman then grounded to second and reached on an error, loading the bases.
Tyler Pinson was hit, forcing in a run, and Teel followed with a two-run single down the leftfield line.
In the second inning Wright bounced a grounder down the third base line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andress. Leinberger singled to left and with two outs and Pou tripled off the wall in dead centerfield, plating two runs for a 5-0 Sewanee advantage.
In the fifth Pou dropped a single into short center, between the shortstop and centerfielder, and Fortman followed with a deep drive to center, off the glove of the centerfielder, with Pou scoring from first. Pinson struck out but reached after an errant throw from the catcher, with Fortman scoring on the play. Teel was hit and Petrocco followed with a two-run single to right, extending the lead to 9-0.
Fortman walked with one out in the eighth and stole second before a free pass to
Jonah Patton. Teel reached on an infield single, loading the bases, and Petrocco's single through the left side made it 10-0.
The second game started poorly for the Tigers, with Trey Kinnan reaching on a throwing error with one out in the first and Ryan Causey drawing a walk. The two runners stole and an errant throw by the catcher allowed a run to score. Nick Tarantino then hit a two-run homer, but Oglethorpe wasn't done in the inning.
Aiden Hosford singled and with two outs, Alex Steckler reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Walks to Shane Newsome and Jaxson Corr forced in a run, giving the Stormy Petrels a 4-0 edge after one inning.
Jennewein and Wright singled in the second inning and both scored on the Andress double to leftcenter, cutting the deficit in half. In the third Pou walked and Fortman reached on a bunt single before Teel's two-run double down the rightfield line. Jennewein followed with a two-run homer to right and it was 6-4 Tigers.
Leinberger singled to leadoff the fourth and moved to second on Petrocco's sacrifice bunt. With two outs Fortman tripled to rightcenter, scoring a run, and after Teel was hit, Jennewein singled to center, pushing across another for an 8-4 advantage.
Oglethorpe struck back in the bottom of the inning, starting with singles from Newsome and Corr and a walk to Cruz, loading the bases and ending the day for Donald. With one out Causey doubled to left, driving in two runs, and Tarantino's groundout plated another, cutting the Sewanee lead to one.
Steckler doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on a single to leftcenter by Corr, knotting the contest at eight.
Cruz walked and stole second to leadoff the sixth and Kinnan struck out but reached on an errant throw to first by the catcher. Cruz came around to score on the play and Kinnan ended up at third, coming across on an RBI single by Causey.
Tarantino singled and Hosford reached on a bunt single, loading the bases. Ethan Snipes hit a grounder to deep short, scoring pinch-runner Brennan Boone with the final run of the game.
