SEWANEE, Tenn. – Hendrix plated five runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the opener and then used two big innings to take the second game as well, sweeping a doubleheader over Sewanee baseball Friday in Conway, Ark.
In the opener
Zach Fortman posted two hits and two RBIs and
Sebastian Leinberger collected two hits and one RBI. The Tigers plated single runs in the third and fourth innings and three more in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead into the ninth.
Hendrix scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the ninth to win, including the game-winning two-run single from Joseph Watts in a 6-5 win.
Matt Munn worked six innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits. The righthander walked two, hit one batter and struck out two.
Henry Collins tossed two scoreless innings of relief before running into trouble in the ninth and
Joey Crews (1-2) got two outs in the ninth but was unable to get the final out, giving up two runs on three hits to suffer the loss.
The Tigers got on the board in the third inning with a one-out single by Fortman followed by an RBI double from Leinberger.
The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Shaun Pope reached on a Leinberger error to start the inning and Drake Job singled up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Ian Guthrie bounced into a doubleplay but Job scored on the play, evening the game at one.
In the fourth
John Bagwell walked with one out for Sewanee and
Jonah Patton singled to left with two outs. Fortman was hit, loading the bases, and Leinberger drew a walk, forcing in a run for a 2-1 edge.
It stayed that away until the eighth when the Tigers took advantage of two Hendrix errors to add on three runs.
Tyler Pinson reached on an error to leadoff and
Will Jennewein followed with a single up the middle. Pinch-hitter
Alden Wright grounded to first, but the throw from Pope was wild and got away, allowing Pinson to score on the play.
Owen Andress then walked, loading the bases, and two batters later, Fortman delivered a two-run single up the middle, extending the lead to 5-1.
In the ninth Austin Rabago singled to right to start the frame and Zylan Brown was hit before an RBI double down the leftfield line by Pope, chasing Collins from the game. Job grounded out to second, driving in a run, and Guthrie's swinging bunt down the third base line plated another, cutting the deficit to 5-4 with one out.
Owen Shaw then singled to right, putting runners on the corners, before Hogan Ralston struck out looking. Pinch-hitter Alex Musel walked, loading the bases, but Watts singled to leftcenter, driving in two runs to cap a five-run inning, giving Hendrix the win in the opener.
Hendrix scored five runs on three hits, an error, a walk and a hit by pitch in the second inning of the second contest. The Warriors added two runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
Pinson provided the only run for the Tigers with a solo homer in the fifth.
Sewanee and Hendrix will finish their series Saturday with a single game at Noon.
