SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Matt Munn struck out 12 in seven-plus innings while
Charlie Teel and
Will Jennewein each hit solo homers and Jennewein drove in three runs in Sewanee's 7-4 victory over Millsaps College in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader here at Montgomery Field.
Munn (3-2) scattered eight hits and did not walk a batter, hitting one and giving up one run while in the contest. He exited the game with two runners on base and one out in the eighth, his longest career outing. He was charged with three runs, two earned.
Henry Collins got the final three outs in the ninth for his second save, including a line drive doubleplay with two runners on base and a fly ball to rightcenter to end the game.
Teel posted two hits and two runs scored and Jennewein collected two hits and three RBIs. Sewanee (15-11, 2-7 SAA) scored in each of the first five innings in the win.
Stewart Bonnecasze (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in three innings.
In the second game the Majors (19-7, 6-3) plated eight runs in the final two innings, overcoming a 5-3 deficit en route to the series-clinching victory.
The Tigers took a 5-3 lead after a two-run homer to left by
Zach Fortman, who collected a pair of hits in the contest. Jennewein added two more hits and scored twice.
Sewanee starter
Taj Donald (2-2) pitched well before running into trouble in the sixth. He left the game with a 5-4 lead and two runners on base, which later scored, giving up six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in five-plus innings.
Millsaps Will Norris worked 4.2 innings in the start, allowing five runs on six hits. John Montour (3-0) picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief before Jackson Hood got the final three outs.
In the opener Teel belted a solo homer with two outs in the first inning and Jennewein and
Blake Pou added solo shots in the second inning, both of them to centerfield.
In the third inning
Aidan Petrocco walked and Teel doubled to leftcenter before a swinging bunt down the third base line by Fortman loaded the bases.
Tyler Pinson and Jennewein each drove in runs with sacrifice flies, extending the advantage to 5-0.
Sewanee added a run in the fourth after a leadoff single to left by
Alden Wright and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Owen Andress.
Sebastian Leinberger chopped a ball into the six-hole, beating the throw to first, but the ball got away, allowing Wright to take third. Petrocco's sac fly pushed across a run for a 6-0 lead.
The Majors got on the board in the fifth with three singles, starting with a leadoff hit by Mason Morgan and then a ground ball up the middle from Branyan Bounds. With one out David Abadessa's grounder through the middle plated a run, but Jennewein threw to third and Bounds was out after sliding off the bag. Munn induced a ground ball to end the inning with the Tigers still in front, 6-1.
Sewanee got the run back in the bottom of the frame thanks to a walk to Fortman and a single to right by Pinson, putting runners on the corners. Jennewein's groundout plated Fortman for a 7-1 lead.
In the Millsaps eighth Gray Berry singled to leadoff and Evan Scott was hit with one out, ending the day for Munn.
EJ Ousley grounded a single to right, plating a run, before Case Page bounced into what could have been an inning-ending doubleplay, but Fortman's throw to first was wild, allowing Scott to score from second on the play, pulling Millsaps within, 7-3. Morgan flied to deep center to end the inning.
Bounds doubled to deep center to start the ninth and Fortman's throw to first on a ground ball by pinch-hitter Sam Thomas was high, putting runners on the corners. Bounds scored on a wild pitch and pinch-hitter Wes Carr walked.
Berry lined into a doubleplay, a lunging backhanded grab by Petrocco up the middle before he forced Thomas at second, and Bradley Pelle flied out to rightcenter to end the contest.
Jennewein lined a homer over the wall in rightcenter in the first inning of the second contest to give the Tigers an early lead.
Page led off the second inning for Millsaps with a single and Bounds belted a two-run homer that just stayed fair down the leftfield line. Ware then doubled and Abbadessa reached on an error, but Berry fouled out and Pelle lined out to end the inning with the Majors in front, 2-1.
Sewanee answered in the bottom of the inning, starting with a hit by pitch by Pou and a walk to Leinberger. Pou went to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored when Wright grounded into a doubleplay. Andress then hit a two-run homer to leftcenter, giving a Tigers a 3-2 edge.
Donald retired the side in order in the third and fourth innings before giving up a solo homer to Berry with one out in the fifth, tying the game at three. Wright made a great catch to end the inning on a foul ball in front of the Millsaps dugout, reaching over the railing to snag a pop-up by Evan Scott.
The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-out single by Teel followed with an absolute missile by Fortman, a two-run shot to left for his first career home run and a 5-3 advantage for the home team.
In the sixth Ousley was hit and Page walked before an RBI single from Bounds pulled Millsaps within a run and ended the day for Donald. Ware popped up a bunt but Morgan walked to load the bases.
Petrocco made a terrific play behind the second base bag on a grounder by Abbadessa, getting a force at second, but a run came across to tie the game. Berry then dumped a single down the rightfield line, shallow and maybe a foot from the line, plating a run, and Pelle followed with a two-run double to leftcenter for an 8-5 Millsaps lead.
In the seventh Ousley drew a leadoff walk and Bounds got a free pass with one out. Ware blooped a single down the rightfield line, very close to Berry's hit in the previous inning, loading the bases, and Ousley came across on a wild pitch.
Morgan also walked and with two outs, Berry bounced a single into centerfield, plating two more runs for an 11-5 Millsaps lead.
In the bottom of the inning Jennewein singled and Fortman walked before a pinch-hit double by
Jonah Patton plated a run. Pou also walked but Leinberger flied out to end the game.
Sewanee ends an eight-game homestand this Tuesday with a 2 p.m. contest against Covenant College.
