SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Russ Marr collected 26 points and
Fletcher Bigham added a career-high 24, but Oglethorpe used a 24-7 run to overcome a 12-point deficit and then held off a late rally by Sewanee in a 103-100 victory over the Tigers in men's basketball action here Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
Sewanee (15-8, 7-3 SAA) put together a 12-4 run midway through the second half to take an 83-71 lead with eight minutes to play, highlighted by a basket and two free throws from Marr and a pair of 3-pointers from
Reid Carrier.
The Petrels (13-9, 5-5 SAA) answered with a quick 13-1 spurt that took less than three minutes. Dylan Pumpian made a pair of triples and Malachi Dooley added one as well around baskets by Perry Robinson and Dooley, cutting the Tigers lead to one with 4:35 to play.
Graham Smith connected on a three for the Tigers before a 3-pointer by Mason Kemp and then an old-fashioned 3-point play from Robinson knotted the game at 90 with 3:30 remaining.
The Tigers made just 2-of-9 shots from the field against the Oglethorpe zone during the elongated 24-7 run, with two points coming at the foul line. Dooley connected on two free throws and Kemp added another three, stretching the Petrels advantage to 95-90 with two minutes on the clock.
Smith posted 1-of-2 at the foul line with 54.8 seconds to play, making it 96-93, and two free throws by Dooley plus a steal and layup from Kemp extended the Oglethorpe lead to 100-93. Carrier made his fourth triple of the game, then deflected a pass that turned into a basket plus the foul by
Luka Avaliani with 19.6 seconds left, but Avaliani missed the foul shot, keeping the Petrels edge at two.
Dooley added two more foul shots with 15.7 remaining before two by Marr with 12.1 seconds on the clock. Pumpian was fouled with 11.1 seconds to play and made 1-of-2, opening the door for the Tigers, but
Tre Corrigan's final 3-point attempt was off the rim.
Pumpian posted 27 points, Robinson netted 26 and Dooley finished with 20 points for Oglethorpe while Kemp collected 17. The Petrels hit 13-of-28 from 3-point range in the game.
Marr recorded his best effort since an ankle injury three weeks ago, making four triples. Bigham collected 24 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with three-plus minutes remaining and Avaliani tallied 21 points. Smith registered eight points, 10 boards and five assists.
Oglethorpe netted the first six points of the game before a 3-pointer by Marr and a basket by Avaliani got the Tigers on the board. Marr added another three but Pumpian answered with a pair of triples and two free throws for a 23-16 Petrels lead.
Sewanee came back with nine consecutive points, starting with a layup and a 3-pointer from Bigham. Smith got a tip-in and Avaliani scored on a layup. Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the half, with baskets by Jordan James and Kemp giving the Petrels a 42-38 edge with three minutes remaining in the period.
Bigham nailed his second three of the half and Carrier followed with one as well. Bigham added a dunk on the final possession of the period and the Tigers led, 49-46, with Bigham netting 18 points and seven boards in the first 20 minutes. Avaliani collected 13 for Sewanee while Pumpian posted 15 points in the first eight minutes and Robinson collected 12.
Sewanee finishes the regular season on the road next weekend, traveling to Rhodes on Friday and Hendrix on Sunday.
