Tigers drop doubleheader at Covenant

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Christian Cain was two-for-four with a triple, RBI, and a run, but Sewanee dropped both games of a doubleheader against Covenant on Tuesday, falling 3-1 in the opener and 7-5 in the second.

In the first game, the teams were scoreless through two complete innings before the Tigers (3-4) broke through in the third. Grace Black singled and later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Madilyn Parker.

Covenant (1-6) responded with three runs in the fifth, capitalizing on three Sewanee errors. A Mary Taylor doubled and scored on an RBI single by Isabella Duran, while a pair of errors allowed two more runs to cross for a 3-1 lead.

Reagen Huskey (2-2) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits, striking out four in a complete-game effort. Leah Edgar (1-3) went the distance for the Scots, yielding one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

The second contest saw the Tigers take an early lead, scoring in the first on a sacrifice fly by Maggie Barker. Covenant however answered with three runs in the bottom half.

Sewanee rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, as Cain had an RBI triple and scored on a single by Sophie Nolen. Parker and Barker added RBIs to tie the game, 5-5.

However, Covenant pulled ahead for good in the sixth when a single sent home the go-ahead run after a two-out error extended the inning.

Abbie Buckner (2-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs on ten hits in three innings. Hanna Hollis and Huskey combined for three innings of relief, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Clark (1-1) secured the win for Covenant, striking out seven while scattering ten hits over a complete game.

The Tigers will open their season at home against Berea on March 7 with a doubleheader before heading to Hawaii for Spring Break, where they will play six games at the Ulili Softball Invitational.
