Women's lacrosse takes down Piedmont on the road

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Elizabeth Muller notched six points as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team opened the season with an 18-13 road victory over Piedmont on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions struck first, but the Tigers responded with three unanswered goals — back-to-back scores from Brooke Sigmon and Sally Herrington, followed by another from Sigmon off a Muller assist.

Piedmont tied the game early in the second quarter with a man-up goal and a free-position shot. Herrington answered with two goals, including a free-position man-up score, to give Sewanee a 5-3 lead. Alexa Berg tallied her first goal of the season after a ground ball pickup by Claire Dillard, and less than a minute later, Sigmon extended the lead to four off a Caroline Stutz assist. The Lions cut the deficit with consecutive goals, but Kennedy Harcourt netted her first collegiate goal on a man-down opportunity with 20 seconds left in the half, giving Sewanee a 9-6 advantage.

Piedmont opened the third quarter with three straight goals to tie the game, but the Tigers quickly regained control. In less than a minute, Finley Connors, Muller, and Morgan Boylan each scored to reclaim the lead. The Lions stayed within striking distance with two more free-position goals, but Harcourt and Muller responded with goals of their own to keep Sewanee in front.

After a Sewanee turnover led to a Piedmont goal, Muller completed her hat trick to extend the lead again. Another free-position goal by the Lions made it a two-goal game, but a yellow card gave Sewanee a man-up opportunity, and Alex Kelly capitalized with a goal.
Despite one final man-up goal from Piedmont, the Tigers closed the game with three unanswered goals to seal the 18-13 win.
Muller ended with four goals and two assists, while Herrington and Sigmon posted three goals each. Herrington added two assists, and Sigmon recorded one.

Defensively, Winnie Pajcic led the way with three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and three draw-control wins. Dillard and Harcourt each added two caused turnovers, with Dillard collecting three ground balls and Harcourt picking up two. Sofia Bean, Sally Whitehead, Molly Starkey, and Kelly each registered a caused turnover.

Kelly dominated the draw with 10 draw-control wins, while Herrington added four. The Tigers outshot the Lions 39-24, though Piedmont goalkeeper Ansli Cannon made 14 saves to keep the Lions in the game.

Sewanee returns home for its season opener on Friday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. CT.
