SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Reagen Huskey picked up a win and a save in the circle while
Abbie Buckner and
Sydney Tackett both collected two hits in both ends of a doubleheader, helping Sewanee sweep Wesleyan College, 13-2 and 11-8, in softball action Saturday in Macon, Ga.
The Tigers (3-1) won the opening game in six innings behind four innings from Huskey along with a 14-hit attack, including three hits by
Madilyn Parker, two hits and two RBIs from
Christian Cain and two hits and three runs scored by Buckner. Sewanee scored five runs in the fourth and sixth innings to end the contest.
In the second game the Tigers plated four runs in the third and fourth innings and Huskey tossed the final 2.2 innings for a save.
Maggie Barker and
Ansley Giffin tallied three hits apiece and
Grace Black drove in three runs. Sewanee pounded out 15 hits in the second contest as well.
Huskey (2-0) worked four innings in the opener, allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Hanna Hollis tossed the final two scoreless frames, giving up five hits with one strikeout.
In the second inning
Kaylie Smith reached on an error with two outs and Buckner followed with a single before a two-run double from Parker put the Tigers in front, 2-0.
The Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the third with three hits against Huskey, but the frame started with walks to McKinley Tatum and Sydnee McElveen. Summer Wright followed with a two-run double and Wesleyan loaded the bases later in the inning with singles from Latelyn McCord and Taylor Laviano before Huskey induced a groundout by Makayla Tomlinson to end the inning.
Sewanee answered with a five-spot in the fourth, with Smith hit by the pitch to leadoff. Parker and Tackett both singled with one out, loading the bases. Barker then doubled, plating two runs, and with two outs, Cain singled, pushing home two more.
Sophie Nolen then drove in Cain with a double to center for a 7-2 Tigers advantage.
Sewanee struck for five more runs in the sixth after singles by Hollis and Cain before a sacrifice fly by Nolen. Black's single plated a run as well and Buckner walked with two outs. Parker singled to load the bases and Tackett followed with a bases-clearing triple to right, extending the lead to 12-2.
In the second game Buckner led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, third on a popout by Parker and scored on another passed ball. Buckner singled with two outs in the second inning, stole second and third and came across on Parker's double for a 2-0 edge.
The Tigers extended the lead with a four-run third inning, starting with a leadoff double by Barker, who was pinch-run for by Sadie Meachum. She came across on Giffin's RBI single and Cain walked. Black plated both runners with a double and Smith's sacrifice fly made it 6-0 Sewanee.
Wesleyan answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame after Tatum singled and McElveen doubled, driving in a run. McElveen later came across on an error.
The Tigers collected four more runs and five more hits in the fourth inning, with almost all of the damage done with two outs.
Tackett doubled with one out and Giffin posted a run-scoring double with two outs. Cain then singled and Nolen reached on an error, pushing across a run. Black and Smith followed with RBI singles for a 10-2 Sewanee lead.
The Wolves came right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning after Amber Searcy walked with one out and stole second. Tatum and Ava Fobian both singled and McElveen plated a pair of runs with a double. With two outs Kyrstin Barnard scored two more runs with a single and Haley Blankenship's RBI double made it 10-7.
Tackett and Barker both doubled in the fifth for a run, but the Tigers left the bases loaded in that frame.
In the bottom of the inning Tatum walked, stole second and scored on Fobian's single before Huskey entered the game. She walked McEleveen but got a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat. Huskey allowed a single in the sixth but got three groundouts to end that frame and recorded three outs around a hit by pitch in the seventh to finish off the contest.
Buckner (1-1) pitched well for four innings before running into trouble in the fifth but still picked up the win in the circle.
Sewanee continues its road swing to begin the season with six games this coming week beginning Thursday at Covenant College.
