SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Cleveland netted 14 points and
Zoe Sedo added 10 but Sewanee got off to a slow start offensively, shooting 22 percent in the first half in a 78-58 loss to Millsaps in women's basketball action Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
The Tigers (10-11, 3-5 SAA) posted just 13 points in the first half thanks to poor shooting and 15 turnovers. Millsaps (17-3, 6-1 SAA) recorded 22 points off the Sewanee miscues and Garin Freeman registered 11 of her 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
The Tigers put together a 21-5 run to start the fourth quarter, with Sedo netting six points and
Brianna Keating-Rendon hitting three 3-pointers.
Elliott Porter connected on two foul shots, pulling Sewanee within, 68-51, with four minutes to play.
Kayla Northrup's runner and a triple from
Grace Gavin cut the deficit to 73-58 with two minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Elyse Warren collected 13 points and Tia Anderson posted 10 points and eight rebounds for the Majors.
The Tigers got off to a slow start, making just 1-of-10 from the field in the first seven minutes, with Millsaps running out to a 15-3 advantage. Freeman netted a pair of baskets before a 3-pointer from Cleveland, but Whitney Novak answered with a three for the Majors. Warren collected a pair of field goals before another layup by Garin.
Sedo's floater at the 2:27 mark ended an almost six-minute scoring drought before an Emily Adams triple for Millsaps. Sedo added another layup to close the period with Sewanee trailing, 20-7, with the club making 3-of-14 from the field with seven turnovers.
Cleveland scored near the basket to start the second quarter and
Cydney Wright added two foul shots, but Warren collected a basket and two free throws before two foul shots by Novak and a 3-pointer from Lexus Keyes extended the Millsaps lead to 32-11.
Faith Humphrey's layup at the four-minute mark were the last points for the Tigers in the period.
Adams connected on a triple and Anderson posted a pair of layups, giving the Majors a 41-13 advantage at the break. Sewanee shot 22 percent (5-for-23) from the field, including 1-of-11 from behind the arc, and committed 15 turnovers that Millsaps turned into 22 points in the half. Freeman led the Majors with 11 points and Warren added nine for the home team.
Cleveland netted a 3-pointer to open the third quarter and Wright made 3-of-4 free throws before a jumper by Cleveland. Freeman counted for Millsaps with an old-fashioned 3-point play and two foul shots. Adams added two free throws, Warren posted a layup and Haley Franklin collected a basket for a 56-21 Majors lead.
Cleveland's field goal ended a four-minute stretch without a point for Sewanee and she and Wright each made two foul shots before a basket plus the foul for
Lilly Phillips in the final seconds of the quarter.
Sewanee plays Berry on Friday and Oglethorpe on Sunday next weekend in the final regular season home games of the year for the Tigers.
