Cleveland posts 33 points, Tigers hold off pesky Covenant, 95-86

SEWANEE, Tenn.Hannah Cleveland posted 33 points and Olivia Falvey added 21, as Sewanee overcame 22 turnovers and held off Covenant College, 95-86, in women's basketball action here Monday.

The Tigers (7-3) shot 59 percent from the field and jumped out to a 60-45 advantage at the half. The Scots put together a 12-2 spurt in the third quarter, pulling within seven, though a putback from Eliza Everett just before the buzzer gave Sewanee a 74-65 advantage headed to final period.

Consecutive 3-pointers from Chloe Bertrand and Violet Wright cut the score to 80-74 with six minutes to play, but Cleveland answered with a triple, one of six in the contest for the sophomore. Janie Boyd's steal and layup pushed the lead to 11 for the Tigers.

Bertrand made another three and Trinity Smith posted a triple as well for Covenant. After a missed jumper by Everett at the end of the shot clock, Amanda Neff's layup closed the deficit to 85-82 with 3:40 remaining.

Falvey drove through traffic for a layup to end the 8-0 spurt by the Scots and then blocked Wright's shot on the other end. Everett added a block on a Neff attempt under the goal and Falvey beat everyone down the floor for another layup.

Covenant never got closer than five the rest of the way, with Cleveland and Boyd each netting baskets and Adison Howard connecting on two free throws with 10.6 seconds to play for the final score.

Neff paced the Scots with 23 points, including four 3-pointers and 7-for-8 at the foul line, while Bertrand recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Wright added 14 points, hitting 7-of-10 free throws, and Emma Kaye Fuller finished with 13 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland made 12-of-19 shots overall, 6-for-9 from behind the arc, while Brianna Keating-Rendon netted five 3-pointers and 17 points, all in the first half.

Fuller posted two baskets in the first two minutes of the game for the Scots but Falvey made a 3-pointer from the corner to open the contest and had a putback as well as a layup from Boyd, knotting the game at seven.

Cleveland's old-fashioned 3-point play as well as a triple started a 9-0 spurt for the Tigers, with Boyd adding a layup plus the foul as well. Two free throws from Neff ended the run and Ora Hall netted a 3-pointer for Covenant, cutting the Sewanee lead to 16-12.

Keating-Rendon got on a hot streak at the end of the first period, making a 3-pointer, followed by a long jumper and then two more triples. She also assisted Grace Gavin on a layup just before the buzzer, giving the home team a 33-20 advantage at the end of 10 minutes.

Wright netted a 3-pointer for the Scots to start the second quarter before Cleveland made a turnaround jumper in the lane and then a triple, stretching the lead to 42-23, the biggest of the game for the home team. Fuller answered with a three and Cair Canady's steal and layup gave Covenant five straight points.

Fuller's layup pulled the Scots within, 45-32, with four minutes left in the half, but Falvey was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three attempts. Keating-Rendon added another three on the next offensive possession and hit her fifth 3-pointer of the half with two minutes before intermission.

Cleveland collected two more triples as well and Boyd's free throw with 6.5 seconds remaining put Sewanee in front, 60-45, at the break.
