Centre tops Sewanee in home finale

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee closed out its home slate on Saturday at McGee Field, falling to Centre, 28-0, in Southern Athletic Association football action.

The Tigers (3-6, 1-5) generated success on the ground, tallying 90 rushing yards, led by Barton Mixon's 78 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Kade Smith also added a 45-yard run in the opening quarter to move Sewanee inside the red zone on the Tigers' best drive of the afternoon.

Defensively, Sewanee posted multiple strong stands and forced two interceptions. Jaylen Mack recorded a key takeaway on Centre's second-quarter possession, returning it 23 yards, while Athon Herrin added another interception in the fourth. Balint Rendessy paced the Tigers with a team-high 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss, while Max Grumbles and Jalen Hill each recorded sacks as Sewanee totaled four in the contest.

Centre (4-5, 3-3) struck for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to take a 13-0 lead into halftime. The Colonels added to their advantage to open the second half with a 98-yard kickoff return before capping their scoring midway through the third.

Will Simpson was strong in the field-position battle for the Tigers, punting 10 times for 423 yards, averaging 42.3 yards per kick with two downed inside the 20.

Sewanee will conclude the regular season next weekend on the road, traveling to take on Millsaps.
