Second quarter surge sends Piedmont past the Tigers

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Olivia Falvey scored a team-high 15 points, and Janie Boyd and Cydney Wright added double figures, but Piedmont used a decisive second-quarter surge to pull away in a 93-72 loss for the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Cave Arena.

Falvey knocked down two threes and added four assists, two steals, and three rebounds. Boyd finished with 11 points and two boards, while Wright went a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line for 10 points, adding four rebounds and four steals. Eliza Everett paced Sewanee on the glass with seven rebounds, and Hannah Cleveland followed with six boards and six points.

Piedmont set the tone early with a 17-5 first-quarter run in which five Lions scored. The Tigers broke through late in the frame, as Falvey converted back-to-back layups in the final minute and Micha Lovelace blocked a three at the buzzer to bring Sewanee within four, 19-15.

The second quarter proved decisive. Piedmont outscored Sewanee 30-12 in the period and used a 22-4 run midway through the frame to build a commanding lead. The Tigers were held to 3-of-13 shooting and committed nine turnovers that led to 25 Piedmont points, while the Lions collected 28 second-chance points in the game. Falvey and Adison Howard each hit threes, and Boyd and Lovelace added points at the line for Sewanee's scoring in the quarter.

Sewanee regrouped after halftime, outscoring Piedmont by one in the third. Wright opened the period with a layup before Boyd knocked down back-to-back threes. After a 9-0 Lions run, Cleveland split a pair at the line to spark an 8-1 Tigers push, highlighted by a three from Grace Gavin and four made free throws. Everett tipped in a putback in the final seconds to close the quarter.

The Tigers played Piedmont even in the fourth but couldn't erase the early deficit, scoring 10 points at the line and adding seven second-chance points.

Sewanee returns to action Sunday against LaGrange in day two of the CCS/SAA Classic. Tip-off is set for Noon CT / 1 p.m. ET.
