Buzzer-beater sends Bob Jones past Tigers

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Fletcher Bigham posted 26 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists, while Nikolas Avaliani added 16 points, but Bob Jones hit a buzzer-beater three to edge Sewanee, 94-91, on Friday night in the second game of the Lon Varnell Classic in Juhan Gymnasium.

JD Gardner finished with 15 points, including three triples, and Reid Carrier posted 10 points with eight assists. Philip Ryan added eight points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Jack Bakken added nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and six points off the bench.

Bob Jones capitalized on Sewanee's turnovers throughout the night, scoring 29 points off giveaways and adding 35 fast-break points, compared to the Tigers' 14 and 22, respectively.

Tostadas Pouncey led all scorers with 31 points for the Bruins. Shad Vander Hart added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Devin Dean contributed 18 points off the bench for the visitors.

Sewanee trailed by two in the final seconds, Carrier was fouled and calmly knocked down two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 91. But Bob Jones pushed the ball up the floor quickly, and Brandon Wilkins connected on a contested three at the horn to secure the win.

The game featured significant swings from both sides. In the first half, Bob Jones used a 12-2 run, capitalizing on three Tiger turnovers, to take a 33-27 lead with 6:43 remaining. Sewanee answered with an 11-2 burst highlighted by back-to-back threes from Gardner. Carrier later tied the game at 40 with a triple, and Bigham knocked down a three in the closing seconds to give the Tigers a 46-44 lead at the break.

Sewanee opened the second half with four quick points, including a dunk from Bigham, but the Bruins responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50. A Gardner layup sparked a 13-5 stretch for the Tigers, and Jacob Amonett later buried back-to-back threes as Sewanee built a 71-59 advantage. However, Bob Jones answered with a decisive 17-0 run fueled by two steals and two threes, reclaiming the lead at 76-71.

Bigham tied the game again at 76 with a jumper and a three, and the teams traded baskets down the stretch. The Bruins used an 11-2 run to create a six-point cushion with under two minutes to play, but Bigham nailed two late threes to keep Sewanee within one possession. After a pair of Bob Jones free throws and Carrier's clutch makes, Wilkins' buzzer-beater ultimately proved to be the difference.

Sewanee returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m., closing out the Lon Varnell Classic against Covenant. Bob Jones will face Spalding at 2 p.m.
