Merkler leads Sewanee to conference sweep against Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Suna Merkler, Maria Kennedy, and Anna Ellison each hit above .400 as the Tigers swept Rhodes in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-22, on Saturday afternoon in Juhan Gymnasium.

Merkler led the offense with 11 kills on a .429 clip and added seven digs. Kennedy and Ellison each tallied five kills, with Kennedy hitting .400 and posting a block assist, while Ellison contributed two solo blocks, three block assists, and a dig, all while hitting .500. Savannah Gann added 10 kills and nine digs, and Mollie White posted nine kills and four digs. Emma Meyer directed the offense with 26 assists, seven digs, and an ace, while Sophia Caruso anchored the backline with 16 digs, six assists, and two aces.

Sewanee came out strong in the first set, hitting .294 as a team while holding Rhodes to .160. Merkler opened the match with a kill as the Tigers took nine of the first 14 points, fueled by attacks from Merkler, Ellison, and Kennedy. Another 5-2 run doubled the lead behind two kills from Gann and one from White. An 8-3 surge pushed Sewanee to set point, capped by kills from Gann, Ellison, and White, a block from Gann and Ellison, and an ace from Caruso. After Rhodes fought off four set points, White sealed the frame with a kill, 25-18.

The Tigers jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second, aided by two kills each from Kennedy and Merkler and several Lynx errors. Rhodes closed the gap to 13-10 with a kill and three consecutive aces, but Sewanee responded with an 8-1 run featuring two kills from Merkler, one from White, and a solo block from Ellison. Rhodes tallied three straight points late, but Gann clinched the set for the Tigers with an assist from Laney Barnes, 25-17.

The third set saw back-and-forth play early before the Tigers built a 14-8 lead with a 10-4 stretch. White tallied three kills during the run, Merkler and Kennedy added two apiece, and Meyer chipped in an ace. Sewanee then strung together five unanswered points behind kills from Ellison, Merkler, and Gann, followed by a block from Merkler and Ellison. Caruso's ace brought the Tigers within three points of the sweep, and after a late 10-2 run from Rhodes, White finished the match with a kill.

The Tigers hit .299 for the match while limiting the Lynx to just .063.

Sewanee (11-10, 4-6 SAA) returns to Juhan Gymnasium for another conference matchup on Sunday, Oct. 19, against Millsaps at noon.
