SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Brady Lloyd and
Edward Kennedy each scored in the final five minutes of the first half and Sewanee added three more goals in the final 45 minutes in a 5-0 victory over Huntingdon College in men's soccer action Tuesday evening in Montgomery, Ala.
Lörinc Loboda,
Thomas McGowan and
Austin Miller each found the back of the net in the second period for the Tigers (10-2-3), who controlled possession for almost the entire 90 minutes, recording a 25-5 advantage in shots, 14 of those on goal.
Despite keeping the ball in the offensive end for almost the entire first half, Sewanee had little to show for its efforts, failing to connect passes and create scoring chances in the final third.
The Hawks nearly took the lead in the 32
nd minute on an errant back pass, with Christian Ortiz getting a 1v1 chance, but Sewanee goalkeeper
Nathan Vanhoeve was up for the challenge, making the save near the top of the box, and Josh Diaz's rebound attempt into an empty net sailed well over the goal.
Dashun McDonald also had a chance in the 36
th minute to put the home team in front, but his left-footed chance from inside the box bounced past Vanhoeve and the right post.
Sewanee took the lead in the 42
nd minute when
Domenic Desmond was fouled in the box on a pass from
Luke Manley and Lloyd converted the penalty kick, low and left.
The Tigers scored again less than two minutes later on a free kick from Desmond.
Edward Kennedy headed the free kick toward the middle of the box and Manley's shot was deflected but right to Kennedy, who headed it past Huntingdon goalkeeper Trent Wineberg from inside the six-yard box.
Sewanee nearly put up another goal before intermission, with Loboda dropping a pass from down the right to
Ian Cox, whose shot from the top of the box was knocked away by Wineberg. The ensuing free kick was cleared away and
Holden Patterson's shot sailed wide right, ending the period with the visitors in front, 2-0.
Sewanee outshot the Hawks, 11-3, in the first 45 minutes, with Wineberg making four saves to the one for Vanhoeve on Huntingdon's only shot on goal.
Noah Bjorkman nearly scored for the Tigers in the 54
th minute, with Wineberg knocking away a bending shot that hit the right post after the save. Sewanee added a third goal on a corner kick in the 67
th minute, with Loboda finishing a cross from
Isaac Rasheed.
In the 74
th minute McGowan controlled a long pass forward from
Charlie Williams near the penalty spot, with McGowan beating his defender left and shooting just inside the right post for a 4-0 advantage.
The final goal came in the 87
th minute, with Manley's pass forward from down the leftside deflected. Patterson tracked it down near the endline and passed across to Miller, who was waiting for the chance and buried the shot from inside the six-yard box.
Wineberg finished with nine saves, playing all 90 minutes for the Hawks.
Sewanee returns to conference action this weekend, hosting sixth-ranked Trinity University in the team's first home match since September 16.
