SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sydney Bixby led the Tigers with seven kills and hit .375 with just one error on 16 attempts, but Sewanee fell to Southwestern in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in SCAC volleyball action.

Bixby paced the offense with seven kills, while Savannah Gann added six kills and 10 digs. Kiera Baldwin contributed eight digs, and Sophia Caruso tallied 10. Anna Ellison led the defense at the net with four blocks, and Emma Meyer recorded 22 assists and two kills.

Southwestern took an early 6-3 lead in the first set before Sewanee rallied with a 10-4 run fueled by kills from Ellison, Bixby, Gann, and Maria Kennedy, along with a key block from Ellison, pulling within one. The Pirates responded with a 5-0 spurt to go ahead 22-16. Despite the Tigers winning five of the final eight points, Southwestern held on to take the opening set, 25-21.

Gann opened the second set with a kill, but Southwestern answered with three straight points, including two kills and an ace. The teams traded points throughout the middle of the set before a 6-2 run gave the Pirates a 17-12 cushion. Sewanee answered with a 6-3 stretch behind two kills from Bixby and a kill and block from Suna Merkler, but Southwestern closed the set with three consecutive kills for a 25-20 win.

Sewanee came out strong in the third set, taking five of the first eight points with kills from Meyer, Gann, and Ellison, plus a block from Ellison. However, Southwestern countered with an 18-3 run to seize control and finished the match with a three-point burst to seal the sweep.

The Tigers continue their Texas road trip on Sunday, taking on Trinity at noon.
