Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sewanee defeats Piedmont to close out non-conference play

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Russ Marr recorded his ninth 20-point game of the season, leading four Tigers in double figures as Sewanee pulled away in the second half to defeat Piedmont, 85-73, in their final non-conference men's basketball matchup on Tuesday night.

Marr filled the stat sheet with 21 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Fletcher Bigham contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while Luka Avaliani added 14 points and nine boards, narrowly missing a double-double. Eli Holland rounded out the balanced effort with 12 points and seven rebounds. Graham Smith also chipped in seven rebounds, and Tre Corrigan tied his career high with nine assists.

Both teams started slowly, with Sewanee scoreless for the first two and a half minutes until Avaliani forced a steal and finished with a fast-break layup. Piedmont built an early 11-6 lead, but a three-pointer from Marr and back-to-back layups by Holland gave Sewanee a slim advantage. The opening half featured constant back-and-forth action, with Piedmont holding the largest lead of five points. Fisher Darden's buzzer-beating jumper sent the Lions into halftime with a 38-35 edge.

The Tigers came out strong after the break, using a 15-6 run to take a six-point lead they would not relinquish. Marr's three-pointer midway through the second half pushed Sewanee's advantage to 12, capping a 25-10 run. Piedmont answered with a 12-2 surge, led by Isreal Hall's five points, cutting the deficit to two with 6:12 left. However, Sewanee responded with clutch plays down the stretch, including consecutive layups by Bigham and a pivotal three-pointer from Reid Carrier to secure the lead.

Sewanee shot 42% from the field, generating 17 second-chance points, 48 points in the paint, and nine off of turnovers. The Tigers limited Piedmont to just four free-throw attempts (1-for-4) while converting 11 of their own.

Sewanee begins Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on the road, traveling to Berry on Friday and Oglethorpe on Sunday. The Tigers return home the following weekend to host Rhodes and Hendrix.
