SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tre Corrigan netted eight of his 20 point in the final five minutes, Sewanee overcame a nine-point second-half deficit and held off a furious Oglethorpe University rally in the final minute, with the Tigers claiming a 100-97 victory in men's basketball action Sunday in Atlanta, Ga.
The contest was tied at 42 at halftime but the Stormy Petrels put together a 10-2 spurt early in the second period for a 56-47 advantage. Dylan Pumpian netted a 3-pointer to start the run, Malachi Dooley made a triple and Jordan James and Mason Kemp each netted field goals for Oglethorpe (8-6, 0-2 SAA).
Sewanee (10-5, 2-0) answered with a 13-2 stretch over three-plus minutes, with
Graham Smith posting a layup before two buckets by Corrigan.
Luka Avaliani netted 3-of-4 free throws and
Eli Holland added two foul shots and a putback for a 60-58 Tigers edge with just under 12 minutes to play.
The game was back-and-forth for the next six minutes and tied at 75 after a layup by
Russ Marr with 6:06 to go. Corrigan then recorded a layup before 3-pointers by Smith and Corrigan, who made two free throws as well. Marr collected two foul shots, Avaliani recorded a basket and
Fletcher Bigham's field goal gave Sewanee a 91-83 lead with a little more than two minutes to play.
Pumpian netted the fourth of his five 3-pointers for Oglethorpe before Bigham answered with a runner in the lane, though he missed the free throw for a potential 3-point play. Perry Robinson, who led all scorers with 30 points, made two free throws for the Stormy Petrels, but Avaliani answered with a driving layup to keep the lead at seven with 1:17 remaining.
After a miss by the home team, Corrigan made 1-of-2 at the foul line with 46.4 seconds to play. Dooley was fouled and hit both free throws for Oglethorpe with 39.6 seconds on the clock before Bigham got a dunk on the other end after the Tigers broke the press for a 98-90 lead.
That's when things got a little hairy for Sewanee, with James making a layup and Corrigan committing a turnover. Pumpian then hit another 3-pointer with 16.0 seconds remaining and after a timeout, Sewanee was called for five seconds, unable to inbound the ball.
James was fouled on a rebound and connected on two more free throws with 8.1 ticks left on the clock, making in 98-97.
Reid Carrier got the inbounds this time and knocked down two foul shots for Sewanee with 7.0 seconds to play. Robinson's 3-pointer hit the back rim and Carrier grabbed the rebound, securing the road sweep for the weekend for the Tigers.
Avaliani and Marr each posted 22 points, Corrigan added 20 and Smith had 13. Smith and Corrigan each made three 3-pointers and Holland contributed 10 points off the bench.
Robinson finished 9-of-14 from the field and 9-for-12 at the foul line but missed his only 3-point attempt of the second half in the final seconds. He added 13 rebounds as well.
Dooley registered 21 points while Pumpian posted 17, Kemp netted 11 and James tallied 10.
The Tigers started quickly with a pair of 3-pointers from Marr and two baskets by Avaliani. An old-fashioned 3-point play from Avaliani and a putback by Holland put the Tigers in front, 15-12.
Layups by Avaliani and Corrigan, a corner 3-pointer from Bigham and a 3-point play by Marr was part of a 10-0 Sewanee run for a 25-17 advantage midway through the half. Back-to-back triples by Robinson and Kemp cut the Tigers lead to 33-30, but
Darryl Williams answered with a layup and Smith hit a 3-pointer for Sewanee, extending the advantage to 38-33.
Robinson's layup and triple tied the contest at 38 and Kemp's 15-footer gave the Stormy Petrels a 42-41 advantage in the final minute before Holland made 1-of-2 at the foul line in the last 20 seconds, knotting the contest at 42 at intermission.
Avaliani and Marr each collected 13 points for the Tigers, who connected on just 4-of-14 from behind the arc while Robinson led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers.
Sewanee returns home next weekend, taking on Rhodes College on Friday and Hendrix College on Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
