Sewanee tops Huntingdon in five-sets, falls to Maryville

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Savannah Gann led the Tigers' offense with 30 kills and four aces, while Emma Meyer recorded a career-high 42 assists in the first match, and Maria Kennedy anchored the defense with a team-high 35 digs, as Sewanee split their Saturday at the Huntingdon Host Day in volleyball action.

Sewanee started the day with a five-set victory against Huntingdon. The Tigers dominated the opening set, winning 25-14, thanks to an 8-0 run that included two kills from Ella Reynolds and a pair of aces and a kill from Savannah Gann. Sewanee jumped out to a 12-4 lead and maintained control throughout, registering 17 kills with only three errors for a .300 hitting percentage. A kill by Maria Kennedy sealed the set for the Tigers.

Huntingdon responded by taking the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-17, as their offense heated up, posting 15 and 12 kills respectively, while Sewanee managed 10 kills in each of the sets.

The Tigers bounced back in the fourth set, winning 25-16 to force a decisive fifth. Sewanee tallied 11 kills and capitalized on Huntingdon errors, never trailing in the set. They opened the frame with another 8-0 run, featuring kills from Mollie White and Anna Ellison and two service aces by Nicole Radford. Kennedy once again closed the set with a kill.

In the final set, Huntingdon took an early 7-3 lead, but Sewanee battled back to tie the score at 7-7. After trailing 11-8, the Tigers finished the match with a 7-1 run to win 15-12. Blocks from White, Ellison, and Gann, along with an ace from Emma Meyer and kills from Gann and Radford, secured the victory.

Meyer led the Tigers with a career-high 42 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season, adding five aces. Kennedy recorded 14 kills and 21 digs, while Gann notched 20 kills, 14 digs, and four aces. Sophia Caruso contributed 20 digs and four assists, and Ellison posted three blocks with Reynolds and White adding two each.

In the second match of the day, Sewanee fell to Maryville in straight sets, 3-0. Gann led the offense with 10 kills, while Ellison added six kills and two blocks. Meyer contributed 17 assists, three kills, and three digs. Kennedy paced the defense with 14 digs and added an ace.

The Tigers resume conference play this weekend as they travel to Rhodes and Hendrix on Sunday and Monday at Noon CT and 6 p.m. CT respectively.
