Tigers open 2024 season at Berry Kick-Off

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maria Kennedy tallied 19 kills and 14 digs while Savannah Gann collected 19 kills, 14 digs, and two blocks, as Sewanee's volleyball team opened the 2024 campaign on Saturday with a doubleheader at the Berry Kick-Off in Rome, Ga. In their first match, the Tigers fell to Hardin-Simmons in straight sets and later battled Washington & Lee, ultimately dropping the match in four sets at the Cage Center.

Against Hardin-Simmons, the Cowgirls controlled the first two sets with dominant performances. The Tigers made a strong push in the third set, keeping it close, but ultimately fell short, 25-23.

Savannah Gann led the Tigers with eight kills, while Maria Kennedy contributed five kills and four digs. Freshman Suna Merkler, making her collegiate debut, added four kills, four digs, and a block.

For Hardin-Simmons, Liz Underwood was a major force with 12 kills and four aces, while Ali Meyer guided the attack with 21 assists and nine digs.

In the second match of the day, Sewanee took on Washington & Lee, a team receiving votes in the preseason coaches' poll. The Generals won the first set 25-19, but the Tigers responded with a 25-22 victory in the second set, leveling the match. Washington & Lee regained control, winning the next two sets to seal the match.

Maria Kennedy had a standout performance for Sewanee, recording a career-high 14 kills along with 10 digs. Savannah Gann added nine kills and 11 digs, while Emma Meyer provided 18 assists and three service aces. Despite the Tigers' efforts, they struggled with offensive efficiency, hitting .111 for the match compared to Washington & Lee's .250. Avery Myers led the Generals with 17 kills, and Allie Buchholz posted a double-double with 29 assists and 16 digs. Defensively, Sewanee was anchored by Sophia Caruso, who tallied a match-high 18 digs.

Sewanee will host the Sewanee Invitational next weekend, welcoming three teams. The Tigers will face St. Joseph's College of Maine on Friday, Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m., followed by a match against Spalding University on Saturday at 10 a.m.
