Mia Ramirez and
Arianna Shirak combined for the first goal and
Samantha Ferry and
Brianna Fee worked together for the second in Sewanee's 2-0 victory over Bridgewater State in women's soccer action Saturday night at the Maryville College Fall Classic in Maryville, Tenn.
The match was called with a little less than three minutes remaining in the second half due to torrential rain that started in the final 10 minutes.
In the first half Ramirez had a chance to get the Tigers (1-0-1) on the board after passes from Fee and Ferry in the 17
th minute, but the shot rolled just to the right of the net.
Kylene Monaghan posted the team's only shot on goal in the period in the 25
th minute. The Bears outshot Sewanee, 6-4, in the half, though the Tigers controlled the ball for most of the opening 45 minutes but in the middle of the field and not in the attacking third.
Sewanee collected its initial goal of the season in the 67
th minute, with Shirak assisting to Ramirez and a goal in the lower left of the net for a 1-0 edge.
In the 79
th minute Ferry controlled a bouncing ball 45 yards from the net, putting it down and playing a thru-ball down the left side to Fee. The senior ran onto the ball just inside the box and her left-footed shot sailed into the side net, far post, for the second goal of the half for the Tigers.
Sewanee opens the home schedule next weekend with matches against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 5 p.m. and Transylvania University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Puett Field.
