St. Louis, Mo. – Sewanee's women's tennis team fell in the round of 16 to No. 6 Washington University on Saturday, May 11 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.

The Tigers lost in two tight tie-breakers in doubles and fell at line two to send them into singles play down 3-0. Nicole Nowak and Mariella Congeni were down 3-7 in doubles, but came back to force a tiebreaker for the set. Both teams exchanged match points, but the Bears ended up on top, winning the seven-point tiebreaker, 9-7. Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty also fought back to force a tiebreaker, but fell in the tiebreaker, 7-4.

Washington University came out strong in singles, winning the first set on all but one court. Ivy Wilson won the first set for the Tigers at line six singles, 6-4. Ansley Carpenter, at line two, came back from dropping the first set and won the second set, 6-3. At one, Katherine Petty fell in a tiebreaker, 8-10 for the first set. At four singles, Mariella Congeni was fighting back and was up 6-5 in the second set when the match was called.

However, the Bears needed only two more points and collected wins at lines three and five to clinch the match and move into the quarterfinals.

Sewanee's doubles team of Despriet and Petty will compete for the second year in a row for an individual national championship in doubles on May 25-27 at the Dwight Davis Center.
