Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Tigers take down No. 28 Washington and Lee, 5-2

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Peyton Erck clinched the match for the Tigers as they defeated Washington and Lee in the second round of the NCAA tournament 5-2.

Sewanee men's tennis team played their first match of the NCAA tournament following a bye in the first round. Washington and Lee had the lead after doubles, as they picked up wins at lines two and three.

Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund collected a routine win at line one doubles, 8-2. Liam Baer and Gil Weston lost at three doubles 8-4 to Eli Hirshberg and James Kurani. Peyton Erck and Andre-Remi Jakobi fell in a seven-point tiebreaker at line two doubles, 7-9.

However, Sewanee started out strong in singles, as Peyton Erck at two, Quinn Wicklund at three, Gil Weston at four, and Talman Ramsey at five all won the first set. Due to a rain delay, matches were stopped and the match was moved indoors.

Once play was resumed, courts one through four were sent back on. Wicklund was the first to finish with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win to tie the match at two points a piece. Weston finished next with another straight sets win, 6-4, 6-3. Talman Ramsey took the court after Wicklund finished, and came out strong, not giving up another game for a 7-5, 6-0 win. Erck won the first set before the rain, and lost the second after moving indoors. However, he came back to win the third set and clinch the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 decision.

The Tigers will face No. 5 Emory University, tomorrow, May 12 in Lexington, Va. for the round of 16.
