Tigers drop battle to Washington and Lee

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee fell in four three set matches to lose 4-5 to Washington and Lee on Wednesday afternoon in Sewanee.

Sewanee started out strong, sweeping doubles to go up 3-0 into singles. At No. 1, Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty defeated the No. 16 ranked doubles team in the country, 8-5. At three, Mariella Congeni and Nicole Nowak took the second point of the match in a tiebreaker, 7-2, for an 8-7 win. Ansley Carpenter and Sarah Livingston won at two, 8-6.

Petty came back from losing the first set to force a third set, but Lauren Long, ranked third regionally in singles, took the third set for the first singles match to finish, coming in just under two hours on the court. Despriet fell in a battle on court two to the sixth-ranked player in the region, Gabriela Moss, 6-4, 6-4. The Generals tied the score at three a piece after Grace Lorenz took the third set from Carpenter for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 result.

Nowak dropped the first set, but won the next two for a 4-all score. Nowak lost the first in a tiebreaker 7-2, won the second 6-2, and came back from down in the third set for a 7-5 win.

Congeni came back after dropping the first 7-5 to force a third set with a 7-5 second set, but fell in the third 2-6.

The Tigers have a bye in the first round of the SAA conference tournament and will play on Saturday at the Adams Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
