SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Wilson posted two hits and three RBIs in the opener and
Madilyn Parker collected three hits and three RBIs in the second game, as Sewanee split a softball doubleheader Saturday at Hendrix College, taking the opener, 7-6, before falling in the second game, 8-7, in eight innings in Conway, Ark.
The Tigers (9-27, 5-9 SAA) and Warriors conclude the series with a single game Sunday at Noon.
Wilson posted two hits and three RBIs in the opener, helping the Tigers score seven runs in the first three innings en route to a 7-6 victory. Reagan Huskey (6-12) picked up the win, tossing the first five innings and then getting the final four outs, allowing two earned runs on nine hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out eight, stranding the tying run on second in the seventh inning.
Sewanee plated five runs in the first inning in the second game but Hendrix scored six runs in the second to even the game. The game remained tied at seven from the end of the fifth until the Warriors won it with an RBI single by Tori Maldonado in the eighth.
Maggie Barker and
Abbie Buckner each registered two hits and Buckner scored twice in the loss for the Tigers.
Ansley Giffin (2-4) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of relief.
The Tigers plated two runs in the first inning of the opener after a leadoff single by Wilson and a bunt single by Buckner.
Sydney Tackett's single up the middle plated Wilson before an RBI groundout by Barker.
The Warriors answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Betty Wolfe reached on an error. With two outs Ashlynn Fowler singled to right, putting runners on the corners, and Andie Houser reached on another Sewanee error, scoring a run.
The Tigers came right back in the second inning, though, starting with walks to Giffin and
Kaylie Smith.
Grace Black's sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third and both came across on a two-run single by Wilson for a 4-1 Sewanee advantage.
In the third Barker singled to right and reached third on a throwing error on the play and Eve Bournais walked and stole second.
Zoe Crockett then singled to right, pushing across pinch-runner
Emily Litchfield, and Giffin walked, loading the bases.
With one out Black reached on an error, driving in a run, and Wilson's sacrifice fly to right plated another for a 7-1 Tigers lead.
The Warriors cut into the advantage in the fifth with a one-out double by Fowler and an RBI single from Houser. Emma Salis pushed the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt and Houser reached third on a wild pitch before an RBI single by Kendyl Patton made it 7-3.
In the sixth Wolfe singled to start the inning and went to second on a sac bunt by Rylee Harris. Paizley Vaught was hit and Fowler doubled down the leftfield line, plating two runs. With two outs Salis doubled down the rightfield line, scoring another run, and Huskey re-entered, getting the final out of the inning to keep the Tigers in front, 7-6.
Maldonado led off the seventh with a double to leftcenter for Hendrix, but Huskey struck out Samantha Wood and Rylee Harris and Wolfe popped up, ending the opener with a victory for Sewanee.
The Tigers started quickly in the second game with five runs in the first inning, starting with walks to Wilson and Tackett around a hit by pitch to Buckner. Barker and Bournais were also hit, forcing in runs, and with two outs, Parker plated two runs with a single to center.
Sarah Storsteen followed with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead after a half inning.
In the second Houser and Tori Veith both singled with one out and Nakia Fields was hit, loading the bases. Maldonado's RBI single to center plated a run and Wolfe scored two runs with a single. With two outs Vaught's fly ball to rightcenter was dropped, allowing two more runs to come across, and Fowler plated a run with a single to center, knotting the game at six.
Crockett led off the third inning for the Tigers with a double to left and
Christian Cain walked. Parker's single to left scored Crockett, but that was all for Sewanee in the third, with the visitors taking a 7-6 edge.
Fowler doubled to rightcenter to leadoff the Hendrix fifth and scored on a two-out single to right by Fields, knotting the contest at seven.
In the eighth Veith led off with a double to left and pinch-runner Rylee Harris moved to third on a groundout by Fields. Maldonado's single to right scored the game-winner for the Warriors.
