SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Will Yarbro,
Mike Lewishall and
Jadon Fetrow each posted two hits and Yarbro and Fetrow drove in runs, but Millsaps scored twice in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth in an 8-5 victory over Sewanee in the series finale in baseball action Sunday in Jackson, Miss.
The Tigers (11-12, 2-7 SAA) tied the game at one in the third inning on a solo homer by
Jack Roode only to have the Majors (13-11, 3-6) take a 3-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Sewanee again knotted the game in the seventh thanks to back-to-back doubles from Lewishall and Fetrow and an RBI single from Yarbro, but Millsaps plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh and three more in the eighth.
The Tigers used six pitchers in the contest, with Matt Moll giving up three runs on five hits in two-plus innings in the start but
Ben Weiser tossed three scoreless innings to keep Sewanee close.
Luke Bishop (1-2), the fourth hurler of the game, suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Sewanee issued 12 walks and hit three batters in the game.
Millsaps starter Nick Tarantino gave up three runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Gavin Tranchina (1-0) allowed two unearned runs in 2.1 innings to pick up the win.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the first inning with a single by
Hunter Herndon, a walk by Roode and an infield single from Yarbro, but Tarantino got a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
Branyan Bounds led off the bottom of the first for Millsaps, dumping a double down the leftfield line, and Degan Hensley followed with a single through the right side, putting runners on the corners. EJ Ousley's sacrifice fly plated a run, but Moll worked out of the inning without any further damage.
Roode's two-out solo homer to right tied the game at one in the top of the third, but the Majors answered in the bottom of the inning.
Bradley Pelle doubled to rightcenter to start the inning, stole third and scored on a single to left by Bounds. Hensley walked and Will Norris drew a one-out free pass, loading the bases. Evan Scott drew a two-out walk, forcing in a run, but Gray Berry flied out to end the inning with Millsaps in front, 3-1.
It remained that way until the seventh when Lewishall led off with a double off the wall in rightfield and Fetrow followed with an RBI double to rightcenter. Roode walked with two outs and Yarbro followed with an RBI single to right, knotting the contest at three.
Millsaps answered in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff single by Ousley and a walk to Norris. Case Page moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Scott was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Berry grounded up the middle but the Tigers were not able to turn a doubleplay, allowing a run to score. Jackson Ware then singled to left, scoring another run for a 5-3 Majors advantage.
Millsaps broke the game open in the eighth inning, though Sewanee nearly got out of a jam unscathed.
Bounds walked to leadoff and Hensley and Ousley were both hit, loading the bases, but
Braeden Mefford struck out Norris and Page and was ahead 0-2 on Scott before a wild pitch allowed a run to score. Scott then doubled down the leftfield line, plating two more runs for an 8-3 Majors lead.
In the ninth Fetrow walked and
Charlie Teel singled to right. The throw to third got away and into the dugout, allowing Fetrow to score on the play, and Herndon's sac fly plated Teel, but that was all for the Tigers.
Sewanee travels to Rhodes College for a three-game series next weekend starting Friday with a doubleheader at Noon.
