SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Wilson posted two hits with a double and two RBIs in the opener but Birmingham-Southern used big innings to sweep a softball doubleheader against Sewanee on Saturday, 10-2 and 11-0. The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game Sunday at Noon.
The Tigers (4-10, 0-2 SAA) trailed just 2-1 after four innings in the opener before the Panthers (6-4, 2-0) scored six runs in the fifth, including a three-run triple from Olivia Trout. Wilson provided the offensive punch for Sewanee with the two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game Birmingham-Southern plated four runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding three in the third and two in the fourth. Sewanee posted six hits but stranded 10 runners in the loss.
The game remained scoreless in the opener until Katie Hart reached on a two-out throwing error by Eve Bournais in the third inning, with Hart taking third on the play, and Emma Jolley followed with an RBI single to a 1-0 Panthers lead. Leah Wood's solo homer to left in the fourth extended the BSC edge to 2-0.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Bournais reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Sydney Tackett.
Maggie Barker grounded out but Wilson's two-out single to center plated Bournais, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the fifth Hart singled to leadoff and stole second and Morgan McGuire's infield single preceded an RBI base hit by Isabella Fergason. Natalie Snow then doubled in a run before an RBI infield single by Wood. Maile White's walk loaded the bases and Trout's bases-clearing triple followed. Trout scored on a throwing error to the plate, pushing the Birmingham-Southern lead to 8-1.
Fergason plated runs with RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings as well for BSC.
Tackett and Barker both singled and Tackett scored on an RBI double by Wilson in the sixth for Sewanee's other run.
Reagan Huckey (2-3) allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings to take the loss. She threw the first four innings and then got the final four outs of the game after the Panthers posted the big inning.
Snow (4-1) got the win in the circle for the Panthers, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts. MC Campbell recorded the final six outs.
Hart collected three hits in the second game and Fergason and Jaley Davis each drove in two runs. Fergason and Mollie Furr each registered two hits. Trout (2-2) picked up the win with five scoreless innings, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts.
Abbie Buckner (0-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers, giving up five runs on six hits with three walks in two innings.
