Women's lacrosse downs Virginia Wesleyan 21-13

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sally Herrington collected her career-high seven goals as the Tigers defeated Virginia Wesleyan in women's lacrosse action on Saturday evening in Virginia. 

Herrington led the Tigers as she also collected four draw-control wins, two caused turnovers, and one ground ball. Brooke Sigmon followed with four points off of two goals and two assists, adding four draw-control wins also. 

Emma Burns registered her third hat-trick of the season while also picking up two ground balls. Raleigh Cooper also collected three points off of two goals, an assist, and one ground ball. 

Erika Bolcar and Elizabeth Muller both tallied two points apiece, Bolcar off of two goals and Muller with a goal and an assist. Bolcar also recorded four caused turnovers, three draw-control wins, and two ground balls. 

Ella Townsend, Marlin Price, Caroline Harlick, and Claire Saverino also recorded goals for the Tigers. 

Sewanee collected the game's first five goals in just under eight minutes of the first period. Virginia Wesleyan tallied one, but Emma Burns connected on a man-down goal for Sewanee to end the period up 6-1. 

Virginia Wesleyan opened the second period with a five-goal run of their own, tying the score at six all with 5:51 on the clock. 

A goal and an assist from Raleigh Cooper gained the lead back for Sewanee, but the Marlins collected two more of their own to go into halftime tied at eight all. 

The third period was the decider for the Tigers as they tallied 10 goals and held the Marlins to none. 

Virginia Wesleyan outscored Sewanee in the fourth quarter by two goals, but the Tigers' lead from the third quarter secured the 21-13 win. 

Sewanee returns home to resume conference play against Rhodes before hosting another mid-week game against Oberlin on March 27 at 6 p.m.
