Tiger men upset second-ranked Wash U

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee won a pair of singles matches and the final three completed singles outings, including Quinn Wicklund's straight-set victory at No. 4 for the deciding point in the 11th-ranked Tigers 5-4 win over second-ranked Washington University on Friday in Azusa, Calif.
 
Sewanee (6-4) finished its Spring Break trip 3-2 overall, 2-2 against ranked opponents, ending the week with the upset win over the second-ranked Bears (8-5).
 
Washington's Colin Fox and Gaurav Singh won a tiebreaker, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles over Jordan Theron and Wicklund, but Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey defeated Scott Tamamato and Pato Garcia Muriel, 8-6, at No. 3. Andre Remi-Jakobi and Peyton Erck gave the Tigers a 2-1 edge with a 7-5 win in a tiebreaker at No. 2 against Eric Kuo and Jared Phillips.
 
The Bears took control of the match with three straight-set victories in singles, including Stefan Hester's 6-1, 6-1, triumph at No. 6 versus Henry Hyden and John Fakouri defeating Weston, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5. Colin Scruggs also claimed a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 2 versus Erck for a 4-2 Washington lead in the match.
 
Sewanee collected three straight singles victories to end the match, including Theron recording a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 1 over Phillips and Ramsey netting a 6-1, 7-5, triumph at No. 4 against Muriel. That left Wicklund and Sergui Celebidachi on the court at No. 3 in the deciding match.
 
Wicklund outlasted Celebidachi, 7-3, in the first-set tiebreaker and took control of the second set, finishing the victory, 6-1, for the final point of the match.
 
Sewanee returns home to face Wallace State on Saturday, March 30.
