SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Maggie Barker posted three hits with one RBI and a run scored in both games, but Sewanee made too many mistakes in the opener and missed opportunities in the second contest, dropping a doubleheader, 14-10 and 9-5, to Agnes Scott College in softball action here Sunday.
The Tigers (4-6) committed five errors in the opener that led to six unearned runs. Both teams started hot at the plate, combining for 17 runs on 10 hits in the first inning that took 49 minutes. Sewanee led the second game, 5-2, in the fifth before the Scotties plated five runs to take control in a game called because of darkness after six innings.
Sewanee plays at home again Tuesday at 9 a.m. against Austin College.
Barker was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI in the first game and 3-for-3 with a run and one RBI in the second contest, recording a double in each outing. Eve Bournais added two hits in both games and
Sydney Tackett drove in five runs in the opener.
PresLee Hix doubled to the wall in leftfield to open the first game for Agnes Scott and Colleen Thorson followed with a two-run homer to left. Kilee Thomas then doubled to deep center, Mercedes Barker walked and Sadie McCallum was hit, loading the bases. Beck Littlehale also drew a free pass, forcing in a run, and Megan Smith's single up the middle plated a run.
Keke Mays was also hit, forcing in another run, before a sacrifice fly to center by Kristen Gilbert, which ended the day for Sewanee starter Reagan Huskey. Hix plated a run with a groundout to second and Thorson's hard grounder to third went off the glove of
Maggie Barker, allowing Mays to come across for an 8-0 Scotties lead after a half inning.
The Tigers got all of the runs back and then some in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single to center by
Zoe Crockett and a two-run homer to center from Tackett.
Hannah Wilson blooped a single over the head of the third baseman and
Abbie Buckner walked before a single by center by
Maggie Barker loaded the bases.
After a pitching change,
Ansley Giffin drew a free pass, forcing in a run, and a bloop double to short left by
Frances Hunt scored a pair of runs. Crockett walked and Bournais followed with a free pass, forcing in a run. Tackett then drilled a double off the base of the wall in centerfield, clearing the bases for a 9-8 Tigers lead, and forcing the second pitching change of the inning for the Scotties.
Agnes Scott retook the lead in the fourth, with Hix reaching on a throwing error by Bournais to leadoff the inning. The ball went into the dugout, allowing Hix to take second, and Thorson followed with an RBI double to left. Mercedes Barker walked and with two outs, Littlehale also drew a free pass, loading the bases.
Smith singled up the middle, plating a run, and a walk to Mays forced in another, for an 11-9 Scotties advantage.
Sewanee got a run back in the bottom of the inning, with Wilson leading off with a single to center. She scored on a one-out double to rightcenter from
Maggie Barker, cutting the deficit to one, but Thorson belted a solo homer down the leftfield line with one out in the fifth, extending the Agnes Scott lead to 12-10.
The Scotties added another unearned run in the sixth when Littlehale singled to center with one out and Mays reached on a two-out error by
Maggie Barker at third base. Gilbert drove in Littlehale with a single to left, stretching the ASC advantage to 13-10.
Kilee Thomas doubled to leftcenter with one out for the Scotties in the seventh before a walk to Mercedes Barker and McCallum was hit, loading the bases. With two outs Smith's sharp grounder went off the chest of Buckner at short, allowing another run to score for a 14-0 Agnes Scott lead.
Kaylie Smith (1-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers despite allowing just one earned run, six overall, on seven hits in six-plus innings of work. Regan Hutto (4-2) posted the victory for the Scotties, giving up one run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Agnes Scott struck first in the second game as well, with Smith reaching on an error to leadoff the third inning before a one-out homer to right by Hix for a 2-0 ASC edge.
Sewanee answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a one-out single by Bournais before a walk to Tackett and a sharp single to left from Wilson, loading the bases. Buckner's bouncer went off the glove of pitcher Bryn Greenwood and into leftcenter, scoring two runs, and Barker followed with an RBI single to center.
Buckner scored on a double steal and with two outs, Huskey's line drive off the glove of the third baseman plated another for a 5-2 Tigers advantage.
The Scotties started the fifth inning with three straight doubles from Smith, Hix and Thorson, scoring a pair of runs. Thomas's single to center put runners on the corners and after a stolen base by Thomas, Mercedes Barker doubled off the wall in left, plating both runners. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Mercedes Barker to come for a 7-5 ASC lead.
Thorson and Thomas registered back-to-back doubles in the sixth before a wild pitch and then a bloop singled over the circle by Mercedes Barker, pushing the Scotties advantage to 9-5.
Greenwood (1-4) picked up the win with four innings pitched, allowing five runs on eight hits. Hutto got the save with two scoreless frames, striking out three. Buckner (0-1) posted the loss for the Tigers, giving up seven runs on nine hits in four-plus innings. She pitched well until the Scotties got to her in the fifth.
