SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee men's tennis opened day two of the ITA National Indoor Championships as they faced No. 8 University of Chicago.
Playing with Division I/II rules, doubles is one point and all doubles matches are played to six instead of eight.
Sewanee lost the doubles point, falling in all three matches. At one for the Tigers, Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund fell 3-6 to Derek Hsieh and Robert Zhang. At two, Peyton Erck and Andre-Remi Jakobi lost to Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero. Arjun Asokumar and Jack Wong defeated Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey at three, 6-2.
Theron was the only Tiger to pick up a point as he won at No. 1 in three sets, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2. Lines two, three, and four were all decided in a third set, but the Maroons came out ahead. Erck at No. 2 lost the first set, 3-6, came back to win the second, 6-3, but eventually fell in the third 3-6. Ramsey, at No. 3 won the first but lost the next two, 6-3, 3-6, 0-6.
Wicklund lost a tight match at No. 4 as he won the first set, 6-4, lost the second in a breaker 6-7 (2), and lost the third 2-6.
At five and six, Weston came back in the second set, but lost in a breaker, 5-7 and
Henry Hyden fell to Marek Michulka 4-6, 4-6.
Sewanee will face No. 14 Trinity University tomorrow at 8 a.m. for the last day of the ITA Indoor Nationals.
