Tigers fall in day 1 of ITA National Indoors to No. 9 WashU

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The No. 11 ranked men's tennis team took on No.9 WashU on day one of the ITA National Indoor Championships, at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Ky. on Friday morning. 

The Tigers fell to the Bears, 3-4, using the Division I/II scoring system. The DI/II scoring system counts only one doubles point, awarded to the team that wins at least two of three matches and doubles is played to six, instead of eight. 

WashU captured the lone doubles point as Peyton Erck and Andre Jakobi were the only Sewanee team to win doubles, and the Bears came away with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. 

At No. 1, Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund fell 6-4 to Colin Fox and Gaurav Singh and at No. 3, Talman Ramsey and Gil Weston fell to Scott Yamamoto and Pato Garcia Muriel 6-2. 

Sewanee picked up its first victory of the day coming from the No. 2 doubles duo of Erck and Jakobi, 7-5. 

At No. 6, freshman Henry Hyden collected Sewanee's second point of the day with a straight-set win over Garcia Muriel 6-4, 6-2. 

Wicklund came away with a close three-set match against Colin Scruggs, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 4. Theron, at No. 1 recorded the Tigers' third point as his opponent retired, but Theron was up, 6-2, 5-7 4-2. 

Erck fell 5-7, 3-6 at No. 2 to Eric Kuo. Ramsey took the first set, 6-2, but then fell in the next two, 2-6, 0-6. At No. 5, Weston lost to Singh, 6-2, 6-2. 

Sewanee will continue play tomorrow at the ITA National Indoors against No. 8 University of Chicago at 9 a.m. ET.
