SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Ansley Giffin pitched a shutout,
Reagen Huskey allowed one run, and Eve Bournais posted two hits and one run in both games, helping Sewanee to 2-1 and 5-0 victories Friday at the MUW Classic in Columbus, Miss.
The Tigers (2-2) defeated host Mississippi University for Women, 2-1, in the first game and Covenant College, 5-0, in the second contest and play the same two teams Saturday to conclude the event starting at 2 p.m.
Huskey tossed a complete game, allowing one unearned run on just two hits, walking three and striking out five in the 2-1 win. The freshman righthander retired the side in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and allowed one baserunner in the third on a hit by pitch. She induced a ground ball doubleplay after a leadoff walk in the second and worked around a walk and a single in the fifth, getting a lineout and a groundout to end the threat.
MUW plated its only run in the first inning after a leadoff double from Jessica Deming, who moved to third on a one-out fly ball to center by Riley Phillips. With two outs Reagan Newell grounded to short but Tiger first baseman
Christian Cain dropped the throw from Bournias, allowing the runner to come across.
Sewanee knotted the game at one with a run in the third, starting with a one-out infield single by Bournais, who stole second and scored on a single up the middle from
Sydney Tackett. In the sixth Tackett led off with a single and scored all the way from first on a throwing error by MUW third baseman Newell after a one-out bunt from
Abbie Buckner.
Bournais and Tackett collected two hits apiece in Sewanee's six-hit attack and Buckner also doubled.
Giffin tossed a shutout, giving up four hits in a complete game with no walks and one strikeout, getting 13 fly ball and seven ground ball outs. The freshman lefthander allowed singles to two of the first three hitters of the game but got out of the inning with a pair of pop-ups. She retired the side in order in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings and allowed one baserunner in the third and fourth innings.
Sewanee scored twice in the first inning in the 5-0 win against Covenant, with Bournais drawing a leadoff walk and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Madilyn Parker. With two outs
Hannah Wilson's fly ball to left was dropped, allowing a run to score. Wilson went to second on the play and scored on an error by third baseman Helena Nagy on a ground ball by Buckner.
In the second
Sarah Storsteen singled to start the frame, went to second on a
Kelly Walker sac bunt and scored on a two-out single by Bournais. Sewanee added another run in the third when Tackett singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Buckner and came across on a two-out single from
Maggie Barker.
In the fifth Barker singled with two outs and Storsteen walked before Walker was hit, loading the bases. Giffin helped herself with a swinging bunt, driving in the final run for the Tigers.
