Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berry slips past Sewanee in overtime

SEWANEE, Tenn.Russ Marr netted 24 points, leading four Sewanee players in double figures, but Blake Campbell's 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds forced overtime and Berry College outlasted Sewanee, 93-86, in men's basketball action Sunday in Mt. Berry, Ga.

Sewanee (11-13, 7-6 SAA) led 37-35 at the half and the teams traded baskets for much of the second period, though the Tigers took a 67-60 advantage with seven minutes to go after a 12-2 spurt. Fletcher Bigham made a pair of 3-pointers during the run and Cody Baerlocher added a field goal and two free throws.

Campbell hit consecutive triples for the Vikings, though Baerlocher answered the second one with his own three, but Campbell added another 3-pointer a minute later, cutting the Sewanee lead to 72-71.

Marr made two free throws with 1:45 remaining in regulation for a 78-75 edge and Berry missed a 3-pointer on the other end, but after a timeout, a deflected pass turned into a turnover for Sewanee and Campbell's three from the top of the key tied the game with 22 seconds to play. Marr's 15-footer just before the buzzer rolled off the rim, sending the contest to overtime.

Campbell started the extra period with an old-fashioned 3-point play and made 1-of-2 free throws on Berry's next possession. Tre Corrigan and Marr each netted two foul shots for the Tigers before a critical 3-pointer from Jordan Krueger with 1:22 on the clock pushed the Vikings lead to 89-84.

Marr answered with a field goal on the other end with 55.5 seconds to play but Campbell scored on a drive to the basket with 32.0 seconds left and a turnover by the Tigers led to two free throws for Chase Ellis with 23.0 seconds remaining and the final points of the game.

Campbell finished with 40 points on 15-of-25 shooting with five 3-pointers while Braxton Benham added 15 points for the Vikings (15-9, 12-1).

Marr made 8-of-15 shots overall and 7-for-8 at the foul line. Fletcher Bigham posted 17 points, Luka Avaliani recorded 16 and Corrigan tallied a dozen. Sewanee connected on 22-of-25 at the foul line in the contest.

Sewanee started quickly thanks to four points from Marr and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Avaliani for an 11-3 lead less than four minutes into the first half. The Tigers did not score for almost three minutes and four points by Campbell and two free throws from Ellis pulled the Vikings within, 11-10.

Campbell made a 3-pointer and another field goal for a 15-13 Berry edge, but Reid Carrier's triple knotted the contest at 19 at the midway point of the opening half. Campbell's fifth basket of the period gave Berry a 24-19 advantage before Sewanee answered quickly with a field goal by Baerlocher and a 3-pointer Fletcher Bigham.

Baskets by Bigham and Graham Smith put the Tigers in front, 30-26, and Marr added a jumper and a triple late in the half for a 37-35 Sewanee lead at intermission. Marr netted 12 points for the Tigers while Campbell posted 16 on 7-of-12 shooting for Berry.

Sewanee ends the regular season Wednesday at Centre College and will play a quarterfinal game in the SAA Championships next Sunday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
